    1. What is your budget? 700... although cheaper would be great

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Virtual machines mainly. But realistically will spend a fair bit of time doing crypto, networking, programming and maybe setting up some network forensic labs etc... but zero gaming. Not a gamer at all.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No will be using solaris or maybe even FreeBSD

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Nope.

    5. Do you need a monitor? I have an old one lying around somewhere that will do the job.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Some cheap speakers would be nice but no biggie.

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Sure why not...

    8. How can you pay? Bank Transfer/Visa

    9. When are you purchasing? In the next 6 months or so. Just doing my homework now and figuring out what I need to get.

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Im in Co Louth. But would rather buy from somewhere that will build it for me if I pay extra... I have enough headaches without adding to the list. And as mentioned in question 7. If they could overclock it too that would be good.

-edit- Changed the build a bit. No need for a xeon.

How many vm's do you plan on running? Add a dvd drive and an additional sata cable if you need it. I have no experience with vm's so any input would be welcome.

I've read that you want 2-3gb ram per virtual machine so you may want 32gb of ram if you plan on running a lot. You may be better off with an i5 3330 and 32gb of ram. I've read around 4 vm's per cpu core is the sweet spot but as I've said I'm no expert. I'm only going on what I've read. You should be able to get around 16 vm's from a 3330 and 32gb of ram. Possibly many more depending on what they are doing.

HWVS is down so change the processor to the i5 3330 and up the ram to 32gb.

Highest workload will be up to 12 VMs running simultaneously but realistically it will probably have about 5-6 running at the same time. There will probably be 30-50 VM's saved on the machine. So I might add a second HD later down the line.

How does that xeon compare to an overclocked i7?

Im also thinking, maybe it might be best to put as much money as I can into the CPU and mobo and just get a small amount of RAM for now. And then later on upgrade it to 32GBs like you just mentioned. Or is that a bad idea?

The xeon wouldn't be far off an overclocked i7. It has the same stock speeds and with turbo the overclock isn't as big as it looks. Getting an overclocked i7 would cost around €120 more for ivy. About €150 more with Haswell with the extra proc, board and cooler costs. I'm not sure how HT performs with vm's either.

VM's don't need crazy cpu power though unless you want to run loads of them. Finding a balance of ram and cpu power is the way to go. I'm not sure if your other uses will benefit from the extra cpu power much.

You could go with 16gb's of ram for now if you wanted though and add more later if you need it. It should be less of an issue using the ssd for the vm's as if they need to use virtual memory the ssd will be way faster than a hdd. (but still a lot slower than ram)

Made some changes. Upped the ssd to the faster larger samsung 840 120gb. You will need the extra space for all your programs. You can run your vm's from the ssd as well increasing their speed. You could even ditch the 1tb hdd and go for the samsung 840 250gb ssd if you think that would be enough space for you.

Your best bet is to try and work out how much ram and disk space your vm's will take and allow for extra space on top.
