Worth upgrading?

Hi all. I put a computer together a few years ago and I've been pretty happy with it but there is definite room for improvement at this stage. I remember nothing of building it and have no idea of current tech specs.

I have no interest in next gen consoles and would rather move back to PC if at all, university work will be getting done on in irrespective. I'd like to know if the rig I have is worth upgrading and what components would suit. I'm definite on wanting an SSD. My laptop has one and I wouldn't like to take a step back.
Info on the what's in there: Model P5QL Pro, 4GB RAM, GeForce GTX 285, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 @3GHz, 750 GB HD.

Would it cost a lot to get up to decent gaming rig spec?
