Keeping in mind that probably quite a few of those who were disciplined were probably done so because of power-hungry Sergeants/Inspectors/Higher who were looking for a promotion...

I've no problem with Gardaí being disciplined for genuine reasons. I'm guessing the dismissals were to do with the Waterford Trial.
