Hi, I recently went to see this car. http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Focus/LX-1.4/37213742232239590/advert?channel=CARS

Im interested in buying It and done a check on Cartell this evening to see If It had any previous problems. Under Tax clarification It says The vehicle has been taxed other than a private vehicle in the past. The previous tax classification was EXEMPT. It says Class:Private exempt, Date changed: 1 February 2010. Can anyone tell me what this means? It had just been sold on 19th of January 2010.

It means that whoever was the owner before February 2010 qualified for motor tax exemption.

This is the list of possible exemptions:
    State-owned vehicles
    Diplomatic vehicles
Vehicles exempted under the Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1994 (S.I. No. 353 of 1994)
Vehicles (including any cycle with an attachment for propelling it by mechanical power) not exceeding 400 kilograms in weight (unladen), which is adapted and used for invalids
Vehicles which are used exclusively for the transport (whether by carriage or traction) of lifeboats and their gear or any equipment for affording assistance towards the preservation of life and property in cases of ship-wreck and distress at sea
Vehicles which are used exclusively for the transport (whether by carriage or traction) of road construction machinery used for no purpose other than the construction or repair of roads
Refuse carts, sweeping machines or watering machines used exclusively for cleansing public streets and roads
    Ambulances, road-rollers or fire engines
Vehicles kept by a local authority and used exclusively for the purpose of their fire brigade service.
Vehicles which are used exclusively for mountain and cave rescue purposes
Vehicles which are used exclusively for underwater search and recovery purposes

Thanks, Doesn't sound like anything to worry about so. Everything else about the car seems ok.

Dealer said he could go down to €7900. I think im going to buy It. Anyone any thoughts on the price. It has a very low mileage.

They are a main Ford dealer, my sister bought a Fiesta off them over 3 years ago at a very good price after some intense haggling. There were a few small cosmetic things that needed doing and they sorted them no problem. Never had any issues with the car so never had any reason to go back to them with it. I'd try and push them for around €7500, there are plenty of these cars around and petrol models are harder to shift than diesels. The worst they can say is no.

I'd definitely recommend the 1.6 over the 1.4 Focus as the 1.4 is very sluggish but on the new Co2 based tax system a 2009 both the 1.4 or 1.6 will cost €570 to tax per year. If you don't mind that then the 1.6 would be my choice.

Thanks for your advice. Im going to ring both in the morning and see whats the best price I can get on both and go from there. I reckon I can get the 1.6 for ~€7400 so It might represent better value.

I would say you would have a better chance of a discount meeting the salesman than with a phone call

The Zetec has a better spec and is a facelift model too. And those alloys weren't all that cheap when new either.

As the owner of a 1.4, I heartily endorse the above. Laziest bloody engine ever. Not a huge problem, as such, but can be very frustrating for example when joining the m50 north at dundrum. Or anywhere with a bit of an extended drag. Lovely car to drive besides this. And a boot like a tardis!

Thanks for all the comments. Swaying towards the 1.6 now. Would there much difference the two mpg?

Nope, if anything the 1.6 tends to do slightly better.

True. Wish I'd had this advice a few years ago. You tend to go heavy on the right foot in the 1.4, just to do the things the 1.6 would take in its stride.

If you're taking the 1.4 for a test drive OP, make sure you get to somewhere you can try a hill start. You'll see what I mean.

Went down this morning to drive the 1.6. Was much happier with it. Thanks for all your help.
