Upholstery help

Hi fergal. Have you been washed ashore? Anyway, I don't know for sure if that leatherette/trimcel material is available in a pleated finish. Usually, it's a case of sandwiching a foam layer between the trimcell and whatever backing material is used, and then stitching the pleats on an industrial sewing machine. Maybe some classic car upholsterers will correct me?

I got a price today to have the seat done and if they sew in the pleats it was working out between €450 - €600  so even if I pay for the shipping for the pleated vinyl in the ebay link it would still work out cheeper, I'm just hoping there is somewhere closer to home that might sell it. I remember as a kid my legs sticking to a seat with this type covering so it mush be out there somewhere :D

    Hi fergal,

In a previous incarnation, I used to use this sort of material quite a lot. Zhivago upholstery supplies has a huge range of vinyl/trimcell/leatherette materials. Foam, adhesives, heavy duty nylon thread, piping, etc. They used to be on the Bolton street end of Capel street, but I think they're out in the Dublin Industrial estate on the Glasnevin road now, just opposite the cemetery.

Buying the material and getting a dressmaker or similar to sew it up would be a much cheaper option. Unfortunately, I don't have my industrial sewing machine anymore!!

I tried Zhivago cheers they don't do the pleated/tuck 'n' roll but I can get every thing else there that I need. M & M classic cars http://m-mclassiccartrim.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=80 in the UK do it so I sent them an email for a price and to see if they will post to Ireland, it's a handy site for anyone looking for classic car interior trim.

The material in the photo is like Mercedes 'tex-cloth' or MB-tex . I keep referring people to CUC on Ushers Island http://www.cucupholstery.com/contact.html they've been in business a long time so MIGHT remember / have stock of that or similar material ;)

I've bought vinyl/leatherette from ATMlabel.com in Germany in the past. Price wasn't too bad from memory...

would you not just buy the colour/type you need then get someone to sew the pleats into it for you? I've had leather upholstery done by AT Autostyle in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny before and the quality is out of this world. They work with vinyl too. You could call them with your proposition, see if they'd be up for it.

As suggested, buy the materials and get it made up yourself. Zhivago or any other upholstery suppliers would have phone numbers for upholsterers who could do this.

I would prefer to get some that is heat welded as it keeps it waterproof also if you stitch along vinyl the perforated holes make it prone to ripping and as people will be standing on the seat to get in and out of the boat I will need it as strong as posable.
M&M classic just got back to me and they will post this to Ireland http://m-mclassiccartrim.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=72 so I have asked them for a sample of the red and the maroon to see what it's like.

I understand your concerns fergal, but when this vinyl type material is stitched together, there is a fabric strip, like a ribbon, placed behind the vinyl, so that the stitching has a backing or buffer, preventing it from pulling against the vinyl itself. The nylon thread used would easily rip through otherwise. This thread is super strong and cannot be broken easily. When I get around to the upholstery end of my microplus refurb, I will be doing it myself for the most part.

Do let us know how you get on though and best of luck!
