Its the yearly charge divided by 12 for each month of arrears.

I just had to pay an extra 34 euro for july cause she forgot to pay it

€34.42 is the arrears for a 1,401cc to 1,500cc engine. Annual cost is €413

It just seems a waste of money. They should be happy to be getting the 3 months pay or what ever people pay. 6 months etc etc

Are you saying that if people forget to pay for a month, they should just forget about that, and be greatful that people are paying something?

Or, are you saying that they should only have given you a disc until the end of September if you were taxing for 3 months?

On a tangential note, if you purchase a second-hand motor with the Tax out, is the onus then on the buyer or seller to cover arrears?

Three months is the minimum that you can tax a car for. You have a months grace period as such to pay, so that you can pay in the month after the disc has expired without penalty, but after that you have to pay arrears.

You dont actually end up losing any money; in fact it works out cheaper to tax the car for for three months plus a months arrears.

You are only responsible for tax from the month that you bought it.

I would of been happy to just it this way than paying the arrears

But you were still using the car so the tax was backdated for that period of use. If there is no penalty then people would just leave it run out.

I'd still prefer a pay-per-month system myself, especially as it's now all electronic/online anyway
