    Hi All,

I'd appreciate your opinions on the below car. Now, it turns out that the guy in question is actually a part time trader. The price doesn't include VRT. The car is being offered as a private sale and the buyer has go through the VRT process themselves?

He's obviously flying under the radar with regard the Revenue. Also, there is no warranty provided.

Would one run into problems such as purchase invoice and proving when the car entered the country?

I think it was Robert DeNiro in Ronin who said " If something doesn't feel right, it's not right".

    Anyway, your opinions are welcome.

    Thanks! :D

walk away if he won't/can't vrt the car. how long has it been here? you have a week to present it to the nct for a vrt assesment, any more than that and you run into penalties per week for every week its been here. you have to provide ferry reciepts with reg number afaik as part of the proving when it entered

Well he renewed the ad a day ago but it was definitely advertised before that. So not too sure how long exactly. But yeah your advice is good! :)
    Thanks!

Tax aspects aside the problems with buying from guys like this is that a private sale means you are not covered by the sales of goods act. So if the car develops a serious problem the day after you buy it you have no comeback from the seller. Also technically under the law as a private seller he is not allowed sell the car here without first VRTing it.

Now I have no problem with someone trying to make a few quid on the side through selling the occasional used car but a lot of these guys seem to be flipping cars over big time yet are not registered as traders for obvious reasons, the cars they deal in tend to have colourful histories as these are the ones bought the cheapest and they are not obliged to stand over what they are selling.

Did you consider importing one yourself rather than paying a middle man?

run away a private person cant sell a non VRTd car...so its either a private sale and has to be VRTd for sale or its a trader sale and then he can foist it on you and has should give you some form of warranty or at least you would have statutory comeback.

I wouldn't line his pockets tbh. Aside from that the black on that generation civic marks so easily. If i was doing it again id get a different colour.

Its suspiciously cheap as well. Even taking the VRT into account, they seem to be running closer to the €13k mark on the forecourts.

Mmm. This one looks very similar but has 30k miles more, could be just a similar spec car though.

OP, did you get the UK reg of the car?

No Bazz I didn't. He was a bit evasive about the reg. Said he wasn't sure as he wasn't at home and would check later. Thanks all for the good advice. Definitely steering clear.

Had thought of importing one unless we find one here at a reasonable price.

    Again thanks all!

That car is from Premier autos in Clonmel. So definitely a different crowd. As far as I'm aware they're a decent bunch. Actually I think they sold that.
    Again thanks all!

Nobody can 'sell' a non-VRT'd car.
A garage can offer one for sale but must VRT it before actually selling it (unless they sell to another TAN registered Dealer).

OP if you really, really want this particular car then get the seller to VRT it 1st. If they are not willing to to this then either there is a problem with the paperwork (no proof of import date, etc.), or they don't have the money to VRT it......this is not your problem, don't make it your's by buying it on UK plates.

    What about non-resident person?
Are they prohibited from selling their foreign registered vehicle as well?

Whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt:

Reg carefully hidden? Ad sparse on details? There is no doubt.

    I agree. Steer clear.

These cars are often bought off auctions and have little or no history. No reg? Ah come on. Wont VRT it?

    What a joke.

I know that car has been on sale since at least April, as I contacted him back then about taking a look at the car and he took a while getting back to me asking me to contact him later on in the week for what ever reason. So I bought something else, really didn't seem interested in selling at the time. I think the price was 10,500 back then.
