Buying first road bike

    Hi everyone,
I recently went down to watch my brother in law cross the finish line at the Ring of Kerry and I decided there and then I am going to do it next year. I am moving to Tralee for college in 4 weeks and plan to cycle away myself for a while and then maybe join a cycle club in January to get used to cycling among a group. I have reasonable fitness and love spinning classes and know that I have enough time to be well trained for it. But.. I don't have a massive budget and know absolutely nothing about what I should be looking for. I came across one in Halfords and am just wondering if anybody with experience could tell me would this do the job. As I mentioned I love spinning but the whole road cycling will be new to me.
    Thanks, all advice appreciated.

You could have a word with the brother in law for advice !

The halfords bike is an entry level road bike and would get you started, however it is a bit heavy and the component spec is not great, you get what you pay for in the end.

Also with your name having "Jane" in it you may wish to consider female specific frame designs as they will be generally more suitable and more comfortable. Getting a correctly fitting road bike is important and will make all the difference between really getting into it or giving it up.

You have loads of time before the next ROK so get plenty of advice before you make a purchase. If you can avail of Bike to Work Scheme, (you wouldn't be the first student to do so) then you can get a much better spec at about the same price as the Halfords one after the tax relief.

    Hi Babyjane

Once you settle on a reasonable specification you should check out www.chainreactioncycles.ie they sometimes have bikes that are up to 50% off and they deliver all items for free no matter how small the order. They are also a good site for any bits and pieces that you might require for cycling (except the apparel) you can get that cheaper on other sites.
