    Hi!
My friend and I are planning a self guided cycling trip from Shannon to Dublin.
Does anyone know of a rental shop that we can pick up bikes near Shannon and drop off near Dublin. Any other recommendations or options greatly appreciated! We are also considering shipping our own road bikes but the transport is difficult when we have to carry our cases with us.

    thank you in advance!!
    Sandy

There's nothing in Shannon except the airport and an industrial estate. Cycling from there to Dublin would be pretty awful. It's about 250Km with not much to see. I'm sure there's guys from the "midlands" tell you different but I would see no reason to cycle from Shannon/Limerick to Dublin.

Bike hire in Ireland is very basic, average bikes and one day hire, dropping back where you got it. Maybe someone would deliver but I'd guess no one would let you rent bikes and drop them somewhere else like they're Hertz or something.

You would be better doing some circuits around Clare http://www.shannonregiontrails.ie/FindaTrail/ Then jumping on a bus or train and doing the same in Dublin/Wicklow or up to Galway etc.

Don't go to Cork there's a war there at the moment.

As mentioned above, hiring a bike in Shannon is not possible. It might be an idea to contact Dublin bike hire places and arrange for delivery to the airport. Alternatively, maybe arrange postage of your bike boxes to Dublin. I'm not sure how to go about doing this, but maybe someone else may have an idea.

Regarding route, the centre of Ireland is pretty flat, you'd be better off taking a coastal route.
I would suggest heading north into Co. Clare & the Burren region, then the Aran Islands, Connemara, Co. Mayo as far as Sligo. You can catch a train there to Dublin. This route would capture some amazing scenery.
Or, you could head South, catch the ferry to Co. Kerry and explore the peninsulas, then through west Cork. Get a train to Dublin from Cork city. Again, this is beautiful. The war is only in east Cork, so you should be OK.

These are both pretty spectacular routes. Thumbs up from me!

There's a big divide in Cork at the moment. East and West Cork have declared war on each other. The Peoples Republic of Cork may be no more shortly. Could be a case of East Cork becoming the Democratic People's Republic of Cork, and West Cork becoming the Republic of Cork, similar to the Korea situation. Rumour has it that Ban Ki Moon himself is on his way to broker a peace deal.

I was in the City today. It seems to have taken an awful toll on the citizens, most looked to be in a bad way. I'd ask anyone visiting to bring some old clothes to donate to the people of Cork.

Yes, Raleigh Bikes has a deal with bike shops in Ireland that allows you to hire and drop-off bikes in different locations. Mc Mahons Cycleworld in Limerick will deliver the bikes to Shannon Airport for you and then you can cycle to Dublin and drop off the bike there in another bike shop.

    Hello

As said above cycling from Shannon to Dublin is very unspectacular and flat ...coud go via east clare to Kilaloo and follow canal . However if I were you I would do either of the following

    1)
Get the bus from Shannon to Ennis ( 22km) ( or taxi if you can affoord it 30 euros approx)
    http://www.buseireann.ie/pdf/1274973005-344.pdf
there is bike hire in Ennis
    http://www.clarebikehire.com/
Cycle west clare including Cliffs of Moher , Burren, Lahich, Kilbaha, Kilimer, Kilmurry , Labasheda , Ennis ( depending on time....beautifu cycling country)
Back in Ennis take trian to Dublin and hire bike and cycle Wicklow Hills, Powerscourt, etc

2)Hire bike in Ennis and cycle north Clare to Galway and Connemara ....
or Train from Ennis to Glaway and bike hire there and cycle Galway Conemara and then trian to dublin and cycle Wicklow/Dublin hills
