    I'm considering getting a DA, just wondering how many times can a car be polished without removing too much paint?

    Its a bit like "how long is a piece of string"

    Depends on how much clear coat is on the car - varies; even between car to car of the same model
    Depends on how much you remove each time you polish.

    So say you have 20 microns of clear coat and you remove 8 microns the first time, and 8 the second time, that means you are down to 4 microns of clear coat and risk the clear coat failing if you got any further....do a 3rd polish and you've strike-through.

    You'd never really move 8 microns on a DA, unless you were using microfiber pads and doing a lot of polish....I only used it as an example.

    Best thing to do is give it a few light polishes (enhancements), mulitple times, so you get the best of both worlds - shiny car, but lots of times! ;)

    I suppose I’m trying to decide either to buy a machine that I might only use a couple of times or would my money be better spent getting my paint corrected professionally, It’s a black IS200 so doesn’t have a clear coat if that makes any difference?

    Your money is better spent on the machine and products. You'll always have them and its a great feeling when you stand back after doing the work yourself.

    Your car does have clear coat by the way :)

    What I said ealier, the same applies to paints with no clear coat. Though they usually will have more paint to play with for removing.

    I have an sip 100l compressor that gives 10cfm, just looking for something to cut back the orangepeel on a panel i've just sprayed. (Damn cellulose!!) don't want to spend a lot on a leccy one unless i have to!

    No, not sure now! :D

    Either way, you'd tell after the first pass....the pad would have colour transfer. If I was polishing the car, my first thought would be that the panel was sprayed in the past. Then I'd try another panel. Then I'd be scratching my head and eventually work out that its a single stage! :D

    Two weeks ago I spent the weekend hand polishing and washing the car, washed the car today and the swirls are back, I've come to three conclusions, I'm pissing against the wind hand polishing, I need a machine and I'm never buying a black car again. :p

    Thing about Black is that its the best and worse colour.....best when its polished and clean, worst for showing swirls and marks!! :):(


    You'll never get correction when polishing by hand - what you will achieve is removing oxidation and restoring the colour, depth and shine, but the swirls done go away. Hand polishes have fillers in them that help hide the swirls, but eventually they wash away and you're back to square one.
    After you polished the car....did you apply some protection to lock in the polish (and as a result the fillers)? If not, the next time you wash the car, the fillers will be washed away also....back to square one sooner than you would have been had you applied protection.

    For example, if you used AG Super Resin Polish - you should have seal it with Extra Gloss Protection to get about 2-3 months out of your hard work.

    I used Maguires deep crystal polish followed by deep crystal wax, I've used them a few times, car looks great for a few weeks but than back to square one. Maybe I might get a bit more longevity with different products? Was thinking of giving black hole a try, would I be right in thinking it should be used between the polish and wax?

    Poorboys Black Hole is a glaze - they are designed to help fill swirls also. And glazes do a decent job of helping to hide swirls.

    The only thing is...
    Protection is best applied to bare paint work - no polish, no glazes.
    Anything in between the protection and paintwork, hinders bonding and as a result durability. So if you were to hand polish, glaze and protect on top, you've two layers that are each hindering the bonding of the layer applied on top!

    I'd imagine that's because any polishing you are doing by hand is essentially filling in those swirl marks.

    Once you keep washing the car eventually you'll wash the polish out. What you probably need is a machine to cut the layers of paint to correct it and permanently remove the scratches.

    Also after polishing it's always good to wax and or seal the paintwork this providing a protective layer over the polished area giving it greater durability.

    All the above could be wrong! Just a hunch! :D

    Stronger motor so it doesnt bog down as much.

    As Vectra said - the DAS-6 has a 500W motor whereas the DAS-6 Pro has a 850W motor.
    The flex on the standard machine is 3.1m, but on the Pro it's 6m.

    Pads and polish combinations being equal, they will give you the same results - it's just the Pro will get you there quicker!
