    Hi,
First time selling car and gave the buyer the logbook to post. Only afterwards thought how dumb a move that was. Is there any thing i can do? Should i call someone in the Department of Transport.. should i be worried ?
    thanks,
    Jim

Call the buyer, tell them of your mistake, and tell them you would like to correct it, are they far away? Call the dept of transport and inform them immediately.
Depends on what the person was like, if they're honest they will send it off, if not, they won't! Look forward to sorting parking tickets, toll charges, speed fines etc

How long has it been since you sold the car?

    Call the buyer.

And pray its not a case of an expensive lesson...

Ah lads, come on. The OP realises that they made a mistake, no need to rub it in!

I'd second wesf's advice though. Call the buyer and say you accidentally gave them the log book, and that you should send it off. Hopefully they're sound. If not, call Shannon and explain. Surely they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

is there not a web site where you can find out if there was a recent change of ownership that might be helpful to the op

    https://www.motortax.ie/PSE/pseVehicleSearch.do

Will take a few days for the changes to come up on that though.

And they probably will. Chill out, cross your fingers, check it online in a week or two. :)

If you call Shannon, they will send you a form that you sign stating the car is no longer yours and that you have no claim to it.
If you are worried call them and get them to email it to you. Sign it and send it back. It is that simple.

Ok great - thanks for the help all.

And fake the buyers signature and possibly have two logbooks arrive in Shannon, one forged?

Rang Shannon and as you said it was no big deal. Thanks again.

You often hear people give out about the likes of the people working in places like that office in Shannon. However any time I have rang them I found that if you are nice to them they are sound back.

The last 4 cars I purchased, I took the logbook with me. This is either to tax the car immediately, or if I am selling the car on, I don't want to wait weeks for a logbook.

What I do, is write a note to say that I have purchased (make, model, colour, reg number) car and I am responsible for it. I sign it and let the seller take a snap of my license to put their mind at ease. I put the car onto my video toll account and don't act the maggot. If I do, the seller has proof that I bought the car at whatever date and time.

I have said it before and will say it again....the logbook system is a joke and is seriously flawed. It wouldn't be very hard to introduce a carbon copy to give to the buyer, so the car can be taxed and proof of sale is there is stopped on the way home, if driving the car home.

The last four sellers were idiots to give you the log book.

You cannot Tax a car until it is in your name.
If you are planning on selling on then unless you are a dealer you must put the car into your name, or else both seller and yourself fill in an RF105 form (which must include a valid 'garage code').

No they dont, that have a photo of some guys license and a piece of paper that they claim you signed.

Your reasons for taking the logbook as noted already make no sense (and selling the car on with a phantom, unregistered owner is illegal). Ive never had the need or reason to break the rule on this and sold/bought tons of cars here. While you maybe legit, encouraging this is a terrible idea as it opens up people to being scammed in various manners big time.

Not as easy as you think, the form is water marked and is a non-standard paper size, has your name and details on it etc. How can you claim its a joke compared to your handwritten notes?

Maybe they were idiots, but you can and I have taxed a car using the logbook at the local motortax office as recently as April. I dont have a garage and i am not a seller, but when i buy a car, i like to be able to get it taxed, if the tax is out. If im fixing it up to sell on, i dont want to be waiting weeks for a logbook either and to add another owner to the list, as i might only have a car for a few days

    A bit cynical really.

The sense is that i can tax the car if I want to keep it. Then I can send the logbook off. The sense is that I can sell the car without waiting for the logbook to return. Last month, i had bought and sold a car before the previous owner had even received the logbook as he recently bought it himself. I waited for the him to receive the logbook before i gave the car to the guy i sold it to.

What rule is being broken here? I am signing to buy the car and to say i am responsible for it. The person selling to me knows they wont be shafted with fines because they have a signed scrap of paper and a photo of some guys license. Nowhere does it say i have signed to be the registered owner and the seller is well aware of this. If they have a problem, they can insist on sending the logbook off, but i am less likely to buy it, depending on my intentions.

Having been on the receiving end of getting a ticket for non display of a tax disc in a public place a few days after buying a used car with no road tax, i will not buy a car i intend to keep if it has no tax, unless i can take the logbook.i do understand where you are coming from though.

I can claim its a joke, because it is a joke, regardless of my hand written notes, which have allowed me to skip the waiting period before I am able to tax a car. It is ridiculous that people are kept waiting weeks for logbooks and cannot tax a car until they receive it. I am sure they could quite easily come up with a superior system, which would allow the buyer to tax a car they just purchased.

Stupid question, is the logbook the maintenance logbook (only piece of paper to do with my car that says logbook) or what I imagine more likely; the vehicle registration certificate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Most people refer the vehicle registration cert as the logbook as that is what it was called years ago.

    Hello,

What the number or name of the form they sent to you? I have the same problem.

    Thanks in advance
