Advice on new laptop for college

Budget: €500, can be stretched if absolutely necessary.

Intended use: College work (mech eng), internet, excel, powerpoint, word, autocad.

Mobility: Fairly important as I'll be bringing it to college. Ideally around 2.5kg and no bigger than a 15.6" screen so I can use the bag I already have.

Warranty: Whatever comes with it, not willing to pay for more.

Operating System: Windows 7. Not willing to go for Windows 8, that's a deal breaker.

Other: Processor power (i5 if possible) and RAM (6GB+) are my priorities. A numeric pad would be good but isn't essential.

Here are my current laptops specs:

It's 3 years old and I want to upgrade as I reckon it won't be able to easily handle programs I'll be using on my college course. I'm also open to the idea of increasing the RAM and keeping it for another year if you think that's better. Ideally I'd buy from bricks and mortar or an Irish site.

    Thanks in advance.

any reason why 8 is a no go?
There's a desktop version and they've smoothed out most of the issues with using a mouse on it. They're also going to release 8.1 in October that should fix the rest (free to anyone who has 8)

Shops don't really have win 7 anymore ..

From what I've read about it and watched on youtube it looks like another Vista disaster. I have yet to try it though.

Mechanical Eng. myself. If Autocad is the most demanding thing you should be OK with an i5 or something but when they want you to do something more demanding, you might get ****ed. My university tells me I need to look at a workstation laptop, which is 2-3x your budget, because of the graphics solutions they have for the programs they must intend for me to use. You want to find out exactly what software you'll encounter. Contact the course director and get their advice on specs.
