    Any advice for a first road bike , purely to get fitter not going to start doing triathlon or anything.Budget between 500 - 650 euro, any advice appreciated, thanks.

    Right! Would you be averse to buying online? There is great value to be had. Also, the first rule of this site, is we go over your budget.

    If not, the Giant Defy 4 is a very popular choice at that price, excellent frame with scope to upgrade the gears and wheels.

    Most of the big names offer the same-ish spec at those kind of prices. Shimano Sora or 2300 gears, no-name wheels, decent Aluminium frame. Since the frame is the part that you're most likely to keep for the longest time, try out a few different frames and see which one is the most comfortable for your body, everyone is different. I like Felt best of the main big brands. Scott, Cube, Trek, Ribble, there's lots of other big names perfectly acceptable.

    We've had a shed-load of "first bike suggestions" threads lately, have a look around yourself and see what others have suggested.

    just bought first road bike, a scott speedster for 699... try a few at your local shop, I went in thinking of buying giant and after trying a few felt the scott was most comfortable for me

    I have a giant defy 4 and think its a great bike for my needs anyway and ive never had a problem with it
