    Quick Question.

    I'm running windows 8 on a laptop i upgraded from windows 7.

Underneath the laptop the Product Key is there for windows 7.

I have another laptop running vista that i want to upgrade to windows 7, can i use the product key off the other laptop that i upgraded to 8 or will it still say its in use when i try activate it??

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

Nope, by choosing to upgrade to Windows 8, you voided the windows 7 product key. The OEM product key, is also tied to the machine it resides on (the motherboard) so it wouldn't work even if you bought the full version of windows 8

Wrong. See the answer before yours.

Downloaded a copy of win7 stuck in the key, activated over the phone.

    Worked a treat :)

Doesn't mean you have a valid licence, though. Which also means that if MS decide to make the upgrade activation process more stringent ie make it check in more detail for the key from which you upgraded, one or both machines could be deactivated as invalid.

Whether that's likely, I don't know - but the upgrade process for Win8 is already stricter than it is for Vista or 7, so I would just pay for the licence for the software I want to use, or not use it.

Meh!! i was running win7 and upgraded and paid for win8 on my daily laptop.

The win7 key is just going to waste if i'm running 8 on it and not running win7 anymore.

So i used it for my other laptop and upgraded it to win7 from vista.

Fúck em they have enough money

It's not going to waste. By upgrading to 8 you agreeded to kill off that 7 license.

And they didn't get that money by being generous.

The knock on effect of casual copying is more incentive for businesses to use windows, and they must get licenses and that means business licenses are more expensive. It all ads up to extra costs for all goods and services.

    Anyway

READ THE CHARTER esp. the bit about software you own

    Windows is not cheap,

you can get a new laptop for €400 (or even €300 if you are prepared to wait and hunt). But the current prices for a legit license for windows is half. ie. OEM windows is cheap because it has loads of restrictions

    €150.64 Incl Vat

This one KILLS the license you upgrade it from

If you want free software use Unix/Linux/Solaris etc. (has anyone tried ReactOS ?)
Or 120 day trials of microsoft server products tweaked for desktop use.

IMO you done the right thing. You paid for windows 8, you have the win 7 key which is YOURS to use as you see fit.

Nothing will happen, it's a genuine key that you have kept and used yourself, you haven't posted it online for others to use and blacklist it. You are within your rights, don't mind what the others posts are saying.

Can't understand why some people want you to pay for another key when you already own one

Because it's piracy (as by upgrading you agree to the 7 key being blocked). You may be able to get it activated via phone but it's piracy and many don't want to do that.
OEM licenses are tied to the system's motherboard at any rate, so they are only to be used on the one system. If the motherboard dies then the license goes with it. Using it any other way is piracy plain and simple. It's a pain but those are Microsofts OEM licensing restrictions.

Did you purchase a new Win8 license or an upgrade license?

If it was an upgrade license, it was certainly cheaper and reusing the Win7 license is definitely piracy.

FFS lads, all i asked was can i use is, the first poster said yes, it worked, i couldn't give two fúcks if its piracy or not.

Can a mod lock this up please, my question was answered.

Regardless of whether it was an upgrade or not you can't use the OEM key attached to a laptop on any other computer

    it's non-transferrable

again when someone clicks the agree button they have entered a contract

reminder that you don't own software, you have spent money on a license to use the software that still belongs to microsoft subject to any terms and conditions you have agreed to

I take issue with the word piracy as that's a completely different crime which can still carry the death penalty

You gotta love theregister.co.uk they come up with some lovely phrases like "freetard"

yes I think microsoft licensing sucks and is way over priced because they are abusing the monopoly - and this goes back to the 1980's ( OSX upgrade costs €30 and most of the other distros out there cost even less or free ) so if you can't afford it just use something else instead of trying to justify your breach of contract law as "sticking it to the man"

If you activate in away against the license then you run the risk of Microsoft blocking the key and making your system "non genuine". The integrated genuine purchase method is more expensive than an OEM license, and to "fix" it cheaper would involve buying a new license, backing up all your data and doing a re-install. I suppose though that's the risk you take. OEM licenses are bought in bulk for cheap by the OEMs (I think Dell can get Windows home licenses for as low as $19). They are only designed for OEM machines and are legally tied to the machine the license sticker is affixed to

It was his, and he did use it as he see fit. To that end, he paid to convert it into a Windows 8 license key.

You had a charmander, you evolved it, and now you're trying to pokebattle with a charmander and a charmeleon. In every sense, thats called hax and Microsoft is well in their rights to revoke the license's rights to future updates/support/even general use at any time. Wanna give it a shot? For giggles, run the windows genuine validation tool on both machines. Maybe it won't pick it up right away, maybe it will never pick it up, or maybe it will flag one or both as invalid and your PC will start shutting down every couple hours and lose access to Windows Update
