Inverter welder. Look them up. They're the future. As cheap as any arc welder.

I had an old Pulsar up to recently. It was fine, probably 20 years old, but the threaded bar for adjusting the amps broke and I couldn't be bothered fixing it.

Got a new ESAB inverter. Wonderful to use, but will probably die within 5 years with the amount of electronics in it.

Agree about the inverter, long nicer for using than the air cooled, or the one I used was anyway, it was a parweld. Sorry didn't by one the time I bought.

Inverter all the way. The one we bought was supposed to be a "seat", quality brand under different logos at a much reduced price. 2 years in and no problems so far. Much more even output than the air-cooled.

Dont bother. Inverter is the only stick welderto buy. Mine was mid 300 euro parweld. You can use them on a standard plug and I welded non stop yesterday at 150amps as fast as I could change rods and not a bother. Only thing is they come with crap earth clamp and electrode holder

Is it easier weld with the Inverter type? I've only ever welded with the Arc type.

Inverter is just an arc welder. Difference is that the power to the inverter is "inverted". It therefore uses less power and doesn't surge and fall like an ordinary welder. Inverter allows for constant power and therefore a better weld. Wouldn't say it's easier, but in the long term it makes a better weld.

The ONLY downside to inverter welders, as far as I know, is that they don't tolerate a 'dirty' mains supply nearly as well as old-fashioned transformer welders.
If you have a flakey mains supply (power cuts, brownouts, voltage spikes, etc), or anticipate using the welder off a generator, the older technology might be a better bet.

I weld at home in a shed about 50m from the house. I use an extension lead then in the shed. Welder is about 20 years old. Work away on 2.5mm rods and 13A fuse.
I used a 3 phase 'ARC WELDER' at work recently and no comparison betwwen the two. So ya, electric supply has a lot to do with it.

http://www.caulfieldindustrial.com/ were far cheaper than anyone local that I could find.

I bought this one: http://www.caulfieldindustrial.com/esab-buddy-arc-180-amp-inverter-stick--tig-welder/p-e13489pd.html ESAB would be one of the better known brands.

Note 5% off and free shipping too.
