I have an extraction scheduled for 4pm today. I was told by the practice that I could bring in my claim form for my health insurance and they would sign it for me. However, I rang Laya a few minutes ago and they told me the dentist has to write them a letter and state the reason for the procedure and include xrays - I then have to wait up to 7 working days for them to approve it!

I can't just pay for it on the day and send off the receipt with a signed claim form.

Is this the normal procedure, I feel like I've been duped into something to the cost of €700.

Is the dentist/ oral surgeon a fully participating consultant with LAYA (laya can tell you this).
Sound like he/she is not as they are asking you to pay and then you to claim back from LAYA. Someone who is fully participating with the insurance company will do the claim for you.....

LAYA will give you nowhere near €700 back for this

I'm resting up at the moment. I opted to have 1 tooth removed at a cost of €350, with the rest to be removed after the insurance claim is processed (I filled out the Laya forms on-site for the next appointment).

I haven't a clue why I wasn't offered these forms when the dentist who performed the initial exam suggested an extraction and made the appointment.

, go to a fully participating surgeon and you won't have to pay anything for these extractions, nothing, nada, not a cent....

Because the dentist my not have originally known that you had insurance or maybe they're not into filling out forms, they get paid either way....!

Well, you pay your consultation and X-ray but that wouldn't be close to what you're paying....
