Carbon repair in Ireland?

So I took the Focus Cayo out last night for the first time in many months, and the (brazed on) front derailleur hanger popped out of the frame. Still can't figure out how it happened, no stress or collision involved.

Three holes where it was attached. Everything seems a little spongey and my heart is sinking at the thought of what it might cost to repair/replace. Then there's the minor matter of a mildly broken heart...

I'm trying to find out if I can get the carbon repaired in Ireland as much of my searching so far seems to suggest the UK as the nearest viable option.

And then there's the question of whether I should even be considering repair. Is this kind of compromised carbon a terminal destination for a frame?

Appreciate any advice the forum has to offer. Thanks, U.

Have you considered contacting Focus? If you can't recall any damage done to the bike maybe they would repair it under warranty? AFAIK they have 5 years on carbon frames...

I'm looking into it, but (believe it or not) the Cayo is five years old this month.

Might be cheaper to clean and seal up the holes and use a FD band adapter instead. Band sizes are 31.8 and 34.9mm

have seen quite a few jobs from different people. i dont have a number but if you can get your hand on the kayak guy in killarney his is by far the best ive seen.

comparing it to the carbon solutions guys in uk, have seen theyre jobs that were awful and cracked soon after repair on the same frame the killarney guy done afterwards

Thanks for that. Bike gone back to uk for assessment so won't have it back for a few weeks. Titanium frame next time for me I think!

no youve just cracked a frame, youd be mad going ti as much as i love it ive had a few now and crack crack crack. im sub 80kg always which i wouldnt call excessive! its costy too. if you are going to plunge in with one i pray thee, avoid litespeed! awful for cracking and worse for customer service! my vortex along with every other one in the country cracked on head tube and they wouldnt warrant

Very true . Litespeeds cracking on the head tube and no warranty . Shipping the frame back to the US is costly business , even more costly when the bill you for the repairs . Have a look at Enigma for titanium.

I have previously posted about AOR Surfboard based in Farranfore, Kerry

    http://www.aorsurfboards.com/blog/?page_id=408

What I liked about him was that he will only do the repair if he feels it will last. This means anything near a joint is a problem.

What about Van Nicholas? Was looking at one of their frames when I get a bit of money together.

    a quick google shows all.

i have heard of cracking personally but not as bad as good old litespeed

heres the first thing that pops out that shows a) they are in fact prone to cracking but b)they warrant frames

"he's on his 3rd Titanium Van Nicholas frame now"

definitely a whole pile better than litespeed imo though

    Digging up an old thread.

I broke a seat stay at the weekend on a Canyon and I need to get a quote on a repair job. The guy who worked as RoughStuffCarbon, who have been previously recommended here, has moved to Oz. So is there anyone in Dublin who has a good reputation for repairing carbon frames? The surfboard guy in Kerry seems to have a good reputation but would like to check out someone locally first.

Thanks. Just so I have a point of reference, how long did the job take and what was the ball park cost?

220 yoyos and about 4 weeks, but he was only holiday for 2 weeks in the middle and I was away with work last week. When I contacted him I was very clear I was in no rush whatsoever. I would guess he could turn it round in 7-10 days maybe less if needed, you'd have to talk to him.

He came well recommended by a lad from Orwell I know who said several Orwellians had availed of his services and were happy with the results

Jimmys bike shop in Malahide will repair carbon and do an excellent job. Sound to deal with and reasonable. I was in this situation about 6 weeks ago and looked at the options, Jimmys was the one that made most sense seen as I was based in Dublin
