Disability Allowance and Student Bursary

I am on Disability Allowance and am thinking about applying for an MSc Programme which has a bursary of €8000 per year over 2 years. An informal discussion with someone from Social Welfare suggests that this will be treated as cash income and will effectively wipe out my DA.

Anyone got any knowledge or experience of this and know is that correct?

I'm wondering if the college pays me the stipend through their payroll and I get an appropriate letter from my doctor, could I claim it as rehabilitative employment?

I don't have any personal experience of this, so I'm not sure if my advice is worth anything.

Anyway, I'd see it as common sense that with an income of ~€155 a week, which you're earning, your disability payment would be stopped. However, if that's not enough for you to live on, perhaps you could talk to someone from SW about the possibility of getting a supplemental allowance based on means, rather than a payment based on your disability.

As for rehabilitative employment, if your MSc is somehow rehabilitative, check with your doctor first that he/she would class it as such, and then run it by the SW. Even with the note it would still be subject to a final decision by the SW, I think.
