Kosmin Test

Has anyone out there tried the Kosmin test (http://www.brianmac.co.uk/kosmin.htm) either on themselves or on athletes they coach to try to get a prediction of 800m times?

I tried it tonight at training with some juvenile athletes U14-U16 some of whom are middle-distance athletes and some who are multi-eventers and not so used to distance running.

When I went to plug in the results in the calculator at above URL, it gave following:-

    731m 2:10 U16b
    688m 2:15 U14b
    684m 2:16 U16b
    677m 2:37 U16g
    650m 2:20 U14b
    648m 2:46 U16g
    647m 2:20 U14b
    622m 2:54 U14g
    613m 2:57 U14g
    583m 3:07 U14g
    550m 3:18 U14g

Most of the group have not run an 800 recently and some never. For most of the group, the results sound like they could be accurate enough.

But the big thing that is puzzling me is that if I enter e.g the 677 metres run for an U16 girl in the calculator, it predicts an 800m time of 2:37 and if I change that to a boy, it predicts 2:17 - i.e. same distance covered in test but the predicted time is 20 seconds faster for the boy ... even though both athletes were pretty much flat out for the test.

    Any thoughts on this?

Also, anyone got excel formulas for this test ... I tried the ones listed on the above URL but they don't match the calculator for the girls calculations:-

    Female 800 metres Time=1451.46 - (198.54 x Log (Total Distance))

Haven't used it myself, but the middle distance coach in our club was running it on some juveniles recently, thinks it's pretty accurate.
Don't know what's up with the male/female difference.

I tried the Kosmin test about 18 months ago on myself and found it to be over-optimistic. At that time I had not seen the Female predictions. When I went back later and used those formulas, I found them to be more accurate.
I think the "male" version is most accurate for sub-2 min runners and the "female" version for over 2 min, which will be most youngsters (and old fellas).

The excel formula I have is Time(s) =1451.46-(198.54*LN(Distance))
Note it uses the excel natural logarithm LN function (constant e) not the LOG (base 10) function.
I will dig out some of the articles and spreadsheets I had on this subject later and post them up here.
