Asda removing WiiU from its stores

Apologies if this has already been posted here, but I couldn't see it.

Apparently Asda are removing the WiiU from its shelves over in the UK. They're still going to sell it online, just not in store. 360 and PS3 continuing to be stocked in store though. The WiiU must really not have been shifting. Could this be a bad sign? :(

    Link to article.

Their online price was superb, their in-store price was mediocre. Makes sense that in-store suffered

160,000 units... in three months... globally...

Only 3.61 million sold to date and they still expect to hit 9 million my March 2014 (source). That's only 7 months away! They must have a hell of a christmas line up planned.....

the 9m projection was a pre-launch thing, when they expected 4.5m by March this year, IIRC

I can only assume they've dramatically revised the numbers internally, though a price drop could see it do 4-5m globally over christmas

They have shareholders, so they're telling them 9m...can't say one thing in private and another in public really (well, you could, but it's not going to help, investors will want to know what happened to 9m when you don;t get near it.)

Again, the 9m figure was pre-launch of the console, I'm open to correction, but I don't think they've reiterated that as a goal recently, or given any expectations lately

The 2nd article I liked to used the word 'still' which made me think that they had reiterated that goal.

"The company said that it still expected to sell nine million Wii U units by March 2014."

Later on I'll see if I can find the official release from Ninty.

Yup, literally just read that and was coming in to correct myself. Unless there's a dramatic price drop they're not going to hit that, not by a long shot

Makes me think there may be some price drop on the way.

I had a quick look at the games supposed to be coming up around christmas this year and there were no big exclusives that jumped out at me bar Pokemon Rumble. Super Mario and Mario kart are due early next year. Maybe Nintendo are backing that their first party titles are going to shift a serious amount of U's.

Checked out Asda online too. The Wii U isn't even listed with the consoles. A manual search for it finds it, but it's out of stock. Unusual for a giant like Asda to have a big product like the U out of stock, unless they are pulling it totally.

Mario 3D World is due before Christmas, as is DKCR 2 (first one was a fairly big hit), and Sonic: Lost Worlds. Course there could be an official price cut before Christmas, but my guess is one will come next Feb/March: assuming PS4s are thin on the ground over Christmas (if you haven't got a preorder, might be not much point asking Santa for one in November), Nintendo might decide to tough Xmas out at current price then drop it ahead of Mario Kart next year, when the other two next gen consoles should be in plentiful supply.

Total sold Wii U's in Europe Oz and New Zealand from March to June, 10,000..... I dont care what anyone says, that is some low low numbers for a new console.
Apperantly worse than the Gamecube 7 months after launch at the time.

I dont think Mario 3D World can help this time(I'll be getting it), but we'll just have to wait and see.

Glad I have mine but its not being used much, if at all since Feb, I turned it on to download Earthbound, but thats it.

EDIT: Also, in my local Tesco there has never been a WiiU system or game on display, ever. But there is loads of ps3/360/wii/3ds games. Why's that?

I heard a figure of 160,000 units worldwide from years start to july which is frankly pathetic. it was outsold by the Wii in both hardware and software.

You'd have to expect a significant price drop to push sales over Christmas, particularly considering the new arrivals. I'll be keeping a close eye on it, want one just to play Mario Kart and Zelda when they arrive.

And there's the problem with Nintendo, they depend too much on Mario (not so much Zelda tbh), I love Mario, and looking forward to 3D world myself.

When 3D World comes out, I expect the WiiU to take off (better than it is now with Mario U), and again in spring/summer for MK8. Pikmin, W101, WWHD and Sonic Lost World wont dig it out of the deep black hole it is in right now.

I dont think they are going to drop the price of the WiiU before Xmas, €350 for the Delux compaired to the PS4 €400 and Xbone €500, parents will pick up the wiiu to save €50 for little Johnny/Mary. Price drop I can see coming in 2014, see how it sells in this new relaunch period first.

Actually I don't think 3D World is going to shift many systems, its not looking like a must have for me and I'm a massive fan.

Also there is no point in dropping prices in February when everyone is buying consoles in December, €50 isn't enough of a difference either for me€300 for the delux system would set it apart much more.
