I am NOT starting a discussion about abortion ....

I am just wondering - now that the new bill is in place, what is the legal situation as regards disseminating information about where and how to get an abortion ... abroad or whatever.

I understand that it has been illegal to provide or disseminate such info .. am I right ?

    No you are incorrect.

The Amendment as passed after the X Case,

"3° The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.

This subsection shall not limit freedom to travel between the State and another state.

This subsection shall not limit freedom to obtain or make available, in the State, subject to such conditions as may be laid down by law, information relating to services lawfully available in another state."

Can I ask what made you think it was illegal to give out information, this has been settled law since 1992.

Probably pure ignorance - to be absolutely honest.

I thought I had read that some web site was getting in to trouble for including addresses and phone numbers of UK abortion clinics ...... but it may be that I am remembering pre 1992 ?

There was a number of cases back then where SPUC tried to stop SU's and others from giving out info. But the X case and refurendum cleared that issue up.

If I'm right, there is legislation on this and I think only doctors and registered organisations can give such information - certainly at the level of counselling.

Are you saying that you think it may still be illegal to, say, put it on an individual's Irish facebook account ... or Irish web site ?

I am shocked that this law still stands. Appalling. However I am not seeking a discussion of it here. That goes beyond the actualities of the law.
