N27 - Cork South City Link - Dug up .. again?!

I'm just a little curious as to what's going on with the Cork City South Link (N27).

There are serious ESB Networks works going on again and they've a large hole dug in the outbound carriage way (lane 2) and have closed lane 2 too.

The outbound carriageway was only just resurfaced. It seems like absolute madness to rip it up again.

Also, the inbound carriageway has become really worn out. Is there any plans to resurface it? I would suspect it's going to be an absolute mess by the end of the year if something's not done.

It has to be one of the busiest sections of DC in Ireland and you would just wonder at the logic of burring major ESB and Gas infrastructure directly under it.

It is a direct route between the city centre and the suburbs.

The additional lanes and that it is the outbound carriageway means the work can be done without excessively impacting traffic and residential areas.

What is annoying me about this is it would be a lot easier for all users of that road if the ESB were actually constantly working on whatever the problem is.

I have passed the site both ways in the last week about 10 times and all I can see is unattended machinery during the working day.

    Yeah, I've noticed that too.

They need to get something like that over and done with very quickly to minimise disruption.

Yeah, it doesn't disrupt people on the way *in* to work but it does cause major delays when you're trying to get home again which is not really very fair.

Without excessively ? The closure of one lane caused major impact on traffic heading in the lower Glanmire Road. Huge tailbacks all week on the quay coming in.

so in the month of august 2012 the south bound lane is closed and dug up and both lanes resurfaced. Now less than a year later dug up again in spots but bereft of any activity from ESB, whats going on? and guarantee they won't have the competence to reinstate the road as it was and low and behold come this winter pot hole central.

There is more activity in the two fitzpatricks tow trucks than on the road works!

This is typical fare in Cork.

They completely resurfaced Barrack Street and then 6 months later, dug about 15 trenches across the street at various locations. I have no idea why they did it but it's destroyed the street.

Happy days long ago catching frogs and tadpoles around that very spot.

No prizes for guessing what is under there ;)

When they built the South Ring Road, they had to dig out peat to a depth of 9 metres.
