insurance excess

    why do we have an excess on our ins premiums? is it me being cynical thinking its there to make more money from us? surely the whole point of insurance is to protect yourself and other people from incuring a loss?

    The higher the excess the more risk is being assumed by the customer, and therefore the lower the premium.

    I have always thought that it was usually to stop people putting in nonsense claims for tiny amounts.

    I think it also swings the other way; it helps ensure that stupid little things don't cause claims to be logged against your account.
