I know one person claiming over 24k in benefits a year. she is not entitled to, but claims them. I am seeking what peoples thoughts are. would you report this ? or just turn a blind eye?

its amazing when you think. this lady I know is doing this for the last 5 years. if another 832 people got away with this also for the last 5 years (which id say more did) that's 1 billion euro of a cost to the taxpayer.

If there was an incentive put in place. A reward for reporting people. lets say 10% of the yearly savings from the amount saved by the state by reporting someone and legislation brought in with a mandory jail sentence for welfare fraud. I guess, we would pay back the national debt very quick and the level of welfare fraud be very low , if not zero.

joan burton, if your reading this. theres your answer to savings and recovery.

our welfare budget is over 20 billion a year. This amounts to 1/3 of all expenditure in the country. This is an incredible amount. im sure 25% (5 billion) of that is not serving the purpose its supposed to.

Your maths on this are way off.

    833 x 120000 (24000x5) = 99,960,000

Which is just shy (€40,000) of €100,000,000.

Big difference between 100 million and a billion.

its not 1,000,000,000 sorry . ok. its a 100 million. still a big savings for a small amount of people.
I think to save a billion we are looking at maybe 41,500 claiming the same benefits from over 2.2 million already claiming.
that's accounts for half our population (man, women & child) claiming a welfare benefit. would I be correct to say welfare accounts for over 4400 euro per year for every man woman and child in the country. That's incredible.
