    Hi photography forum :-)

I've been lurking around here for the last while trying to soak up some of the vast knowledge. My brother bought a Canon 650D with a 18-55mm lens recently. We have been enjoying playing around with it so far and are looking to get a second lens to grab some distance photos of wildlife and the sorts. Thus far I've been mostly interested in taking photos of nature, scenic shots, photos of the landscape, insects, flowers, birds and hopefully some rarer wildlife.

There will be some family photography mixed in there too but we aren't looking for professional grade photos so I assume the 18-55mm lens we got in the camera bundle will do fine for that, images certainty seem high quality so far, very crisp and clear.

I was hoping the experts here could give us some pointers on the lens to get and maybe where we could get it.
We were thinking of the Canon 70-300mm IS USM lens http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B000B84KB6/ref=ox_sc_sfl_image_1
Would this be a good choice? And since we have started searching the lens seems to have went up around £50 on Amazon so is there somewhere a little more affordable to get it?

Thanks for the help in advance!!

I know I misspelt lens and my post wasn't the most fun to read but does anyone have any advice to someone looking to get into photography?

    Landscape/general use: Canon 17-40mm L F4.0, excellent lens on a crop sensor
Wildlife is a bit trickier as you want something fast and long. the 70-200 F4 L non is could be one for you
Insects your looking at a macro lens which i know nothing about

Sounds like you are looking for one lens that fits all requirements. There are plenty of lenses out there that will provide the required focal length range, unfortunately none are particularly good

    Thanks for the info M5!

I realise that I listed nearly all possible uses :P But I do realise I won't be able to get one lens that will do it all. I listed the uses just to give an idea of what we have been messing with so far.

We are looking for a zoom lens I think because of the novelty of it being able to get shots of things up close. I will probably eventually get a macro lens for up close shots.

Had a look at the 70-200 F4 L lens, it's nearly double the price of the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM even though we would love the quality of an L lens I think we will hold off on getting one for another while :-P

    Again thanks for the help!!

    Good thinking batman :-)
I have to be honest, we have bought the 70-300mm already from http://hdewcameras.co.uk/ using http://flubit.com/ as it was two days before I got the reply we just went ahead with it in the end.

But I do appreciate the suggestions M5 and next time I'm in the market I'll be taking a look at those lenses.
    Thanks!!
