No power on white iMac

I have a Apple iMac White "Core 2 Duo" 2.16, late 2006 model I think and leave it running 24/7.

Tonight I sat down to use it and there was no power. I pressed the power button a couple of times and nothing. Disconnected everything attached and unplugged for a couple of minutes and then tried again, this time I got it to power briefly, got the chime and the screen lit only for it to die again and now its as dead as a dodo.

I took the plug fuse out but that is fine so Im guessing its something gone in the internal power supply that may need replacing, capacitors or the whole unit?

Anyone any idea of potential cost in getting this repaired if it is indeed the problem and am I on the right track with my thinking for the cause of the issue?

Mactivate are very close to where I work so I may bring it to them to look at but if the cost is going to be high well then it really wont be worth it.

    Thanks in advance.

Dropped in to Mactivate earlier and it is the PSU that is the problem.
Getting it replaced today for an acceptable fee so theres life in the old Mac yet!

That's good. At least it's not the logic board. :)

    Ah sh*t! That's a shame. Hmm, I hope I didn't jinx that on you. :o

7 years is pretty good going, though, especially if it was running 24/7. I've a 2006 iMac as well which is starting to exhibit fair amount of issues. I'd say it's living on borrowed time at this stage.

Was it your primary machine? Are you going to replace it?

I was using it mostly as a media server as had put a 1TB drive in it a couple of years ago. Music library and movies and TV shows being the bulk of it.

Have a 2010 model that I use for photo editing etc but only has a 500GB HD in it. Dont think I will transfer all the media on to it(a lot of it has already been viewed or is just sitting there) and with the advent of iTunes Match its not as important to have all my music on the Macs HD. I can always attach the 1TB external HD that I was using as a back up disk on the 2006 model and pull files off it if and when I need them

I`m happy enough I got the life out of it that I did. The guy in Mactivate told me they had a few 2006 models in recently with the same problem so there could be a rough life span to the logic board.

Not sure if they were going to charge me or not for looking at it but I left the machine with them to use for parts, asked them to wipe the HD and we called it quits.
