Belfast sink with laminate worktop

I am in the middle of doing a job in my kitchen knocking my utility room and taking in some of my hallway to create a bigger kitchen with a seating area with a wood burning boiler stove.

We were originally thinking of spray painting my solid oak kitchen getting new work tops handles and move a few things around.

We have a friend who is a carpenter and he said that making all those alterations to our kitchen could cost €2000 and it would be still a kitchen I am tired off it's 15 years old. He basically said we could probably get a new PVC kitchen for €3500 so we are gonna look into that and he is calling out tomorrow to measure up to get a price.

I am very keen to get a Belfast sink but have a vague notion I read somewhere that they do not work well with a laminate worktop we are on a tight budget so we could not afford Granite so we were thinking of going for Ivory doors with a walnut effect laminate.

Is this true or does anyone have any experience with this ?

A Belfast sink needs to teamed up with stone worktop or else a solid wood worktop.

Thanks for reply Paddy my carpenter called to house today to take measurements and discuss what we want and he said the same.

He said some people just put granite or solid wood around the sink area and then a laminate on the rest. I think it will be an ordinary sink for me as the prices for granite even in small amounts are shocking !!!!!

    Hi emcm,
It's true that original Belfast sinks only work with solid wood or granite but
You can get the same look at a fraction of the cost if you go with one from ikea, they have a lip at the side which allows them to sit over your laminate Worktop meaning no water can get in and it looks great , I have done this now for two houses and it came out well, I've attached a pic, they have two sizes of sinks 60cm 80cm and they both show at the front. Domsjo is the name of them

Did you apply a self amalgamating strip or a bead of clear or white silicone sealant to the underside of the sink, prior to installing it????
