Have an 03 Hyundai Coupe that has been sitting up for quite a while. Went to start it this evening and the battery was dead, so I borrowed a battery from another car and although it would crank/turn over it would not start.

I'm assuming as it turned over that the starter is fine, so what's likely to be brown , the fuel pump?

And what would be the best way to test this?

Not trying to be funny, but did you check to make sure there is fuel in it?

lock the car leave it alone for a few minutes then unlock the car and try and start it .... sometimes the immobliser needs to reset its worth a try :)

Battery may not be correct ,it need to be similar rating as there may not be enough current to run the starter and create spark at the same time.

not really true. This wouldn't affect starting abilities so much unless he (she) is trying to start car with battery from moped. Manufacturer recommended specs are important to run your car daily but not so for one off starting.

+1 on alarm/imobiliser to reset. Try to take off battery and then put it back again or lock/unlock doors from remote several times.

Could be spark plugs and wires too. Check wires if they have not coroded thus not giving electric contact to spark plug. Pretty common thing if car has been sitting for a while.

Cheapest and quickest way to see what's wrong is to get diagnostic equipment plugged in. It should identify the problem right away.

What part of Ireland are you in? Might be able to recommend someone to you.

Check it for a spark. Take the plugs out and turn it over. If petrol squirts out you got a fuel pump. This will a also clear any floddin from the misfire

A duff crankshaft sensor will display the same symptoms too. Try getting a diagnostic scan to confirm.

    Lad,

Don't be wasting your time taking out spark plugs that will reveal nothing.

Look at it this way, Do you think your problem is electrical or mechanical?

    Solution!!!

Electrical = Diagnostic Scan with dealer level equipment, it will tell you if immoboliser is activated or not, it will tell you if fuel pump is work as it should or not. and a whole lot more
