I'm trying to boot from a DVD of linux and from a USB but my laptops boot menu only gives me an option to boot from the network. I've been able to boot from other sources before my HD broke, how to I get fix this?

Can you get into the BIOS?
Have you installed a new hard disk and want to install OS to it, or just boot live CD?
More info on make & model might help.

You need to install harddrive and then do a reinstall of the os.

So you are saying you had more boot options (via the boot menu (f12)) before your hdd broke? Doesn't sound right. I assume you don't have a built-in optical drive. You need to go into the bios initially and check out the boot options to see of booting from usb is enabled.
