If I would import a car with first registration 2004 this year, would she get 1 or 2 years NCT?

Yeah but it was regd in 04 so if it came in last year it'd be 2014, same expiry date if you bring it in this year, 2014

    Should be two years.

Cert valid for one year is issued to vehicles presented for their 10th anniversary of first registration NCT.

NCT centre might not agree with you, but law is on your side.

So are you saying a car with its birth year being an even number can have an nct expiry on an odd numbered year

(Apart from older cars which had different criteria)

i thought something dodgy was going on - looking for a new car (2-3 k price) seen a couple of 05's whose nct expires in 2014 ( i assumed it would be tested this year till 2015)

    Yes.
AFAIK from 2010 (or maybe 2009) every imported car which is over 4 years old is due NCT on date of registration in Ireland.
So f.e. if you imported 2008 car and registered it today (29th July 2013) your NCT would be due today.
Once you do it, it will be valid until 29th July 2015 - so exactly as you said even number car with odd number nct.

The Nct will go from the first registered date, which is the first registered date that is on the UK V5. It is NOT from the date its registered in Ireland. So you will only get one year.

I work in Vrt in a Nct centre.

Are you saying that once car is imported NCT when done will be valid until next due date based on first registration in country of origin?

If so - please tell us what do you do in Vrt and Nct centre? Because surely you don't deal with that kind of stuff.

    That's not correct.

If the imported vehicle is more than four years old on Date of 1st Registration in Ireland the Test by Date equals the Date of 1st Registration in Ireland.

Its two years. When I imported my 04 fabia earlier this year I got two years test

It was first registered in the uk on 18 march 2004
It was registered in Ireland on 11 feb 2013
It was tested on the 16 may 2013
Test will expire on 10 feb 2015

I'm sure ye will believe me and there is no need to put up a copy of my N.C.T cert and log book!!!
