Hi folks, heading to Wicklow this weekend for a spin and the route suggested takes us through a lovely sounding place called devils glen, just looking for advice on gradient, toughness of the climb and terrain. On map my ride its coming up as aprox 4 k in length, just wondering is it a solid 4k of climb or are there any flat ish sections to it?

the devil's glen is a forest walk, on an untarmaced surface. i don't know if bikes are allowed, but i would suspect not.
the woodland surrounding may also be referred to as the devil's glen, but again it would not be a tarmaced surface.

There is a climb there of the same name. Dunno if it's the official name but at least amongst some cyclists this is the one...

fair enough - as the OP mentioned 'through' the glen, i assumed it was the path along the river.

    Possibly is.

Anyway, if it's the road, it's quite steep at the point I linked to on the map. It drags up for quite a bit leading up to that section and then after that it eventually eases off. It's ages since I rode it.

The R763 is known in the area as Devil's Glen http://app.strava.com/segments/832605

    10% gradient according to Strava

Did it once myself on a hot summers day when the fir trees were giving off a scent that gave me an idea of what it must be like to have asthma. The 'easy' steady section beforehand will soften you up for the steep section, no matter how easy you take it.

Long ago, the LionOfFingal is reputed to have dismounted on this one

There's also what's know locally as Easy Devil's Glen, and is a LOT easier than the R763. Which one are you going up? Easy is much closer to the 4km in length you mention.

Not 100% sure which one, I presume/hope it's the easier of the two, as its also on the 120k route of cycle for st Catherine's on August 17th, maybe some of the Wicklow boardsies might be able to answer my query, prob should have mentioned the fact that its in the sportive

The last time I checked the St. Catherine's one is mapped for going up the Devil's Glen proper. I'm not sure who thought of the route but in my opinion it's a mistake. It will have a lot of people off their bikes and is completely unsuitable for the folks that are probably only heading out to do the 50km route.

Was looking at that spin also, from the map it looks like the Devil's Glen alright, the non - easy one.

It is a tough one - but the only real hill on the spin, thankfully encountered early enough.

very steep - like most of the roads that go from the N11 up towards Roundwood (Red Lane, Slaughter Hill etc).

+1 - it confused me as the rest of the route seems designed to facilitate quite unfit people like me. I might drop them a mail, the easy Devil's Glen climb, with the turn off not far beyond the top (heading to Annamoe) would seem the sensible option.

It's the last 100+yds that get pretty steep, going around a slight right hand bend.
Got a new coat of tarmac a couple of years ago.
    It's fun.

I did the Wicklow200 in 2005 where I was told we climbed The Devils Glen, it was my first W200 and I remember climbing past loads of people walking pushing the bike while my inner voice was screaming that I was not going to get off the bike! There are lots of pictures on http://www.wicklow200.ie/gallery/2005W200 a word of warning though, I just went to the site to take a look and my AVG removed "Exploit Blackhole Exploit Kit(type 2371)" associated with the gallery.

I did this on Saturday on a mountain bike! Went from Greystones to Ashford where the hill starts the road eventually leads to Annamoe. Went on down to Laragh and back to Greystones via Roundwood. If i could do it anyone could! The climb is tough but relatively short.
