Beginner Clubs

I am looking for a bit of advice for buying a set of clubs. I am just starting out and want to purchase a decent set of clubs at a modest enough price. As a beginner I don't really know what brands to avoid like the plague, but theres no point in me buying a set for €300-€400 if I turn out to be complete rubbish!

I was in sportsworld and seen the Dunlop TP12 set but after a bit of a check on the web it seem like they are complete rubbish. A quick scan on ebay and I found the some Prosimmon brand that seemed to get decent reviews as a beginner set but seemed way too cheap to be believable. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/PROSIMMON-GOLF-DRK-COMPLETE-LEFT-HAND-GOLF-PACKAGE-SET-/290813524808?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Golf_GolfClubs_JN&hash=item43b5d63b48

BIG problem for me its that I am a lefty, and it seems very difficult to get a decent 2nd hand set at a good price.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What is your budget? I would suggest second hand as most golfers look after there clubs well and you can pick up some great bargains on quality clubs. Also if you don't take to it you would be able to sell on handy enough with little loss.

I suppose because I'm new to the game I don't want to spend a heap on clubs, so budget would definitely be under the €200 mark, with a hope to picking something up for around €150

Have a look on www.adverts.ie under the golf section. It is very popular and you should find something. If you want post back here what you are thinking and people can advise if they think it is good value.

The clubs there do look old enough though and the paint/chrome is cracking. To be honest I'd say you could find a better set than that with better value, and it'd be nice if you could sell on your clubs on after you upgrade your set. You don't want to be getting clubs that have undergone too much wear and tear as you could be using them for another year or two.

Those clubs are not the best. I would not go near them unless you're looking for super cheap. I wouldn't pay more than about 15-20 for all of those.

There isn't a great selection on Adverts right now to be honest except for the King Cobra clubs. You might get these for €200.

If you just want a cheap set to get out there and hit balls there is a set up there from a guy in Clontarf that would only set you back €35 according to that ad. You could get out and smack around with these for very little money.

All depends upon how much you want to shell out now.

Ya agreed with Kace they look poor enough tbh. Not exactly a lot going around for leftys from a quick look myself. Would be a good option what Kace suggested just buying super cheap and going out having a muck around with them.
I would also like to point out that a set of good second hand irons(might cost you 200-300) will take some time to depreciate in value so you would probably not lose to much if you did want to fork up a bit more for them. You will also be very glad to have a decent set when you get hooked after a few rounds like most of us did.

There was a set of Wilson fat shafts on adverts for 90 euro.. looked nearly brand new and ment to be very forgiving set of irons.. I actually suggested to a mate of mine to buy them but he had no mone.y

Get yourself a set of irons and a putter. Maybe a driver if you really want it. That'll get you around the course and you'd pick up a grand set of irons second hand in your price range. MD golf and Ben Ross do cheap putters first hand in most golf shops. Cheap bag and you're away. €200 would be more than enough for this and you'd be getting better quality than a cheap full starter kit. You can add in driver, woods, hybrids and specialist wedges as and when you please if you enjoy the game.
