Just wondering how I go go about doing this? I have a new HDD for my laptop and I need to install Windows 7 on the old laptop HDD to the new HDD as the old one is about to burst into flames. Thanks :)

If the setup on the old HDD was ok then you could use pmagic to clone the drive , or just the partition that holds the recovery image if you want a clean install (if you are lucky you might have an option to make recovery disks and then run the decrapifier to remove the crud added to it after the install)

    if you want pain
there are apps that will do driver backups, or download ALL the drivers you need first having ID'd them

get the digital river ? windows 7 download (it's on microsoft somewhere) and make a windows 7 install DVD

By getting the digital rive download of W7 could I put that onto a USB and boot using that through BIOS?

    I've done this recently.

Microsoft have a tool that will make a USB drive bootable into the Windows 7 installer if you point it to the .iso (which can be legally downloaded for free).

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/23687-Windows-7-Installation-Guide the "repository" link near the top of that thread has some good info too.
