Microfiber Polishing Pads

Is the jury out on these?

    What's the verdict?

I must do my research, but they look like they would have a lot of cut... maybe a bit much... I could also see them getting matted after just one section, and being a pain the town halls.

    Anyone used them?

I used the megs ones shortly after they were introduced.
    The fell apart.

Much prefer my Hex Logic pads

Not used them, and after reading a few reports Im not sure I would!

First thing that put me off straight away, was reports of delamination - where the pad would could free from the velcro with held it to the backing plate - NOT GOOD! Although, reports are that the 2nd rev of them has, for the most part, rectified this.

Second thing, as you have pointed out, they have a lot of cut - so much so that on orange peeled paint, wet sanding and polishing back up, removed less paint than a pass with the Meg's MF.

There is a market for it though, on a DA on hard paint, they would be great for giving heavy compounding, but anyone who is doing heaving compounding will have a paint depth guage and a rotary polisher.

I got two of these polish applicator pads from Halfords and I must say they are the Bee's knees!

I washed/de-tarred/clayed etc. etc. before getting to the polishing stage to use these so the paint was as clean as it could be. using the first one all over the body was fine but it was a little dirty after that so I put it aside and used the other one. Other than the first one getting a bit dirty, they dont matt and they dont cut(?). I put them in the washing machine after and they came out like new. These perticular ones [linked above] were especially easy to use as they have little pockets for your hands so that you don't drop them.

oooooh, we're talking microfibre for machine polishing.... ahhhh, disregard everything I said :)

They have a lot of cut compared to the sponge pads and are often recommended for experienced detailers when working on German paint and in conjunction with the likes of Menzerna FG400 or FG500.

Vectra, I've had a few Hexlogic pads fall apart on me. With that said, I also have ones that are still perfect. The ones that fell apart, I'm nearly sure aren't the real thing as they didn't have the black Chemical Guys stamp on the velcro side and the ones that are fine did.

The problem is, I can't remember where I bought them so I can't go back with them :(

    Yes indeed.
I did read somewhere about there being dodgy hex pads about.

Would you believe, this happens to me the whole time with my small pad on my DAS6! Ive pretty much given up on using it now, its just too risky. It happened the first time I used the pad (the first day I used the DAS6) and it worried the fook out of me. New car and all.

The actual backing plate (3") is way too small for the 3.5" pad, and after bout 2 minutes on a uneven surface (the reason im using the small pad) I can see its about to fly off.

    Apologies, a bit OT

A 3" backing plate on a 3.5" pad shouldnt really be an issue.

What make of pads are they?

Are you centering the pad dead centre on the backing plate so that when it spins, there is no excessive vibration? And are you applying enough pressure on the machine?

Dead center, and I make damn sure its on. Hard to tell about the vibration, since its a dual action. Im applying the same pressure I would on the bigger pad, not too much, not too little. Basically, I can see the pad slightly coming off as im DAing so immediately ill take the pad off the car, and foom! It flies off the backing plate. This all happens within about a second so ive no time to tune it down from 6. I ended up using the small pad at about 4 speed just so it doesnt fling off.

    Heres the pads:

    Thats very strange!!

Almost sounds like the velcro is missing from the backing plate!!

I've had that happen to me, the pad with the velcro stuck to it, come away from the backing plate....though when I put the backing plate on, the velcro was peeling slightly.

I have had this issue as well with the small pads flying off. On saying that though, I do seem to recall it is only the black one that does this.

I've had that happen too with the spot pads but only the ones that I consider to be the "fake" hexlogic ones. It frightened the absolute sh!te out of me the first time it happened.

I've had it happen with the orange ones only. Never had it happen with the black like vectra has.

I used to use the microfiber pads quite a lot. They make the job much easier with a DA, as they generate a little bit more heat and thus get the job/cut done a bit quicker.

They do need a bit more looking after than foam pads, but generally speaking, they will still save you 2 or 3 hours+ on a full job.

No need to be afraid of them cut-wise, they still only cut depending on the polish / pressure you apply. The polish just breaks down that bit easier and quicker, so you can get to work.

Never liked finishing with them though, still used foam for that.
