I'm really dipping my feet into Photography again and learning to use a Canon 550D EOS which came with a 4mb memory card. It isn't big enough, and I'd appreciate some guidance as to a quality card in the 16-32 range.

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.:)

If you're going for large high capacity cards, then you really need to go for the top end brands, like Sandisk or Transcend.

Personally, I use Sandisk, but more usually I use 16GB cards. I do have a 32gb and 64gb cards, which I use a bit for timelapse or video.

Thanks for that advice, I do believe the 16GB cards would be sufficient, I'm also drawn to the Sandisk brand. I have over the last few days gone to both Amazon and eBay with a view to purchasing same. However, when it came to check out, most vendors would only post within the UK.

Allowing for postage/shipping etc., would it be as cheap to purchase in Dublin?

i think this advice should apply to all cards, regardless of capacity. if you spend even a low three figure sum on a camera, why risk losing photos for the sake of ten or twenty quid?

You could use Parcel Motel to ship to Ireland from Amazon / eBay

But for cards , I think this website is good and Irish :

See can you get a card that is a Class 10 (very fast read/write), your camera will have a read/write speed rating so your memory card should be a faster class then that.

I've bought from that site mentioned recently and as an Irish site it was cheaper then other sites.

That's the risk I want to avoid. As I said in my original post, I'm only dipping my feet into the digital aspect of photography and am therefore shooting almost anything that catches my eye.

I'm also shooting all formats up to and including Raw, so the 4GB card doesn't allow much leeway before I have to start deleting to make space. (This is my only card at the moment!). I'm prepared to pay for a good card, but just asking is there a significant saving online - or is it worth the bother?

Many thanks. I'll try this route. I'd really rather stay Irish once it's not a complete rip off.

no they are the best out there for this type of stuff.
I have been buying from them for years and always recommend them when our users are looking for memory

I second ( third, fourth, whatever) memoryc BUT...........

Memory cards fail. This is an unfortunate fact of life. I know some folk have never had a card fail and others have had quite a few but we use 4 gig cards and have never filled one, ever. After each session the images are all copied to Computer, from a handful to several hundred shots, doesnt matter. If doing large shoots we'll use 3 or 4 cards, one for each major 'section'.

Paranoid much? yes sure, but its habit and not really a hassle.

    Memory cards fail

    This is true.
I use a combination of 1Gb, 2Gb 4Gb and 8Gb swapping out cards as they fill up - or per shoot. I don't use video, so have no need for greater then 16Gb cards at the moment.

so don't put all your shots on one cards, you may be very disappointed if they fail.;)

I don't think it's a paranoid thing-- I always empty the as cards as soon as I have an opportunity (and not only after a session) -- because I use aperture to sort my files, I get to create a folder with the day's date and keep emptying there until I change subject -- I, also, use Sandisk; not sure if they're the very best but I never had any major problem with them

I use 2 (+1 backup) 16gb class 4 cards for my regular shooting-- either home studio or out for landscape

    I use 2 (+1 backup) 16gb class 10 for sports and concerts

I use 1 (+1 backup) 64gb class 4 for video (which I intend to upgrade class really soon, at least on the main card and see how much of a difference does it make when recording)

I recently called in to memory to buy a card and got great advice from the guy there. I tought all class 10 cards were the same but even in the same class they have different speed. For 13 yoyos I got a great hi speed class 10, 16 gig card from them. Well worth the visit.

I had heard that Transcend were one of the more dodgy brands, no?
