Do i need public liability?

    Hi All,

I am thinking about setting up a small company in my spare time offering walkng tours of my local area which is quite scenic.

The idea would be that I would have a small tranist bus and take people like tourists to the strat of the walk and bring them on a scenic walk as a tour. I also have one or two uniqe selling points to the tour that I can offer.

Do I need public liability insurance? I am having trouble even getting a quotation from insurance companies, they dont seem to like the idea. I was thinking that instead of having ublic liability I would just get bus transport insurance and get everyone going on the walk to sign a disclaimer to say that they go on the walk at their own risk..? Would that be an acceptable alternative?

PS. also what do you think an acceptable sum of money to pay for bus insurance? I have only ever driven a bus for someone else. Can anyone give me an idea of how much bus insurance for a small 16 eater transit would be?

    Regards,

    Alan

If you have dealings with people other than employees ie the public, then you will need PL Insurance. I don't believe it's mandatory but if you were sued, you could personally lose everything.

I suggest you contact a couple of local insurance brokers who specialises in SMEs. Ask your friends/neighbours/local businesses for a recommendations.
