RTE News just now

The RTE news is on at the moment (9.00 news) and they did a report on the train crash from Santiago de Compostela. Then the newscaster said we go live to our european correspondent live in Santiago. Now, when they went there the picture was of him standing in front of a police van in front of a courthouse with people walking by.

Yet there was no way that he was there - he was standing in front of one of those blue screens. It was so badly done it was laughably. Isnt there an RTE1+1 because I'm sure they were lying.

I dont have satellite to verify it but it was so bad it was terrible. It was the first story btw

Anybody else see it or notice it?

I'm going to be pedantic here - It's a green screen!

It was just a gammy picture I'd say from the glimpse I saw of it.

They're sometimes blue, it depends on the application.

Didn't see the 9pm news, but they had terrible trouble with the live feed on the 6 news.... dunno if there's any connection....

I prefer their Blue/Green trickery then sending 10 journalists over there on a jolly at the expense of the license payer.

I heard they don't even ring D'Angelus at 6, they play a recorded version.
    Merciful lord.

To be fair, it's more than likely that the guy is actually in Santiago, broadcasting live from a studio setting. It's not uncommon at all for a screen to be used.. they may not have been able to broadcast live from outside the courthouse for any number of reasons... most likely there are restrictions on media units causing havoc in the area.

Just caught that piece on the RTE News channel. The video is a bit blocky but it does look like the reporter is actually there. The light on the camera might give that affect too of a blue screen.

Leave RTE alone. Just leave it alone. Just leave it. Ssshh. Shut it.

That can happen alright. If you light the foreground to a particular standard so that it looks like a studio setting it's going to look completely out of place with the background lit by natural light.

The feed at 6pm was awful. They found it tough to contact the reporter.

are you sure it's not a bad satellite feed, that always creates weird colourful blocks

    Haha. That is brilliant.
How on earth could they use a blue/green screen :pac: If people notice, as people did, it just makes the RTE news come off as amateurish and a laughing stock.

Id say its like when they report from Brussels, they use (very bad) green screen then.

Haven't they been doing that for a while though? Even when they say "X joins me now from Brussels" etc, I think their just in another studio in the same building.

Its like on the radio where they say for example, Example Radio's John Smith reports, when John Smith works for a news room which stations subscribe to..

I don't have a problem with it but its not the most "honest".

I always figured they were in brussels but in the local TV studio. I would assume broadcasting from a TV studio would be cheaper than sending over an outside broadcast crew.

I think a lot use internet/fiber optic connections as a means of communicating live streams remotely nowadays. Satillite is just too expensive

Speaking of really bad green screen, does anyone else think that the 5.30 Tv3 news "set" looks horrible?

I would think so yes if they were actually in Brussels. I think it would be a lot of expense even to use a local tv station in Brussels. I'm not sure on this one though

    Meh

Would be good if they could do an intro on RTÉ news like BBC world news do. I always think their cool. The primetime one is good.

Well I doubt the report from Santiago was faked. The reporter is wearing a blue shirt and holding a green mic. The wind is also catching his hair.

It looks like a bad feed coupled with some very strong foreground lighting.

It was just a lighting effect that made him look odd.I'd be more concerned with the accuracy and lack of detail they have in their news reports.Having reporters on the scene is probably more often than not a waste of time as any developements are made public via media release.I often get the impression that the reporter has just rung the RTE studios or watched Sky news to see whats happening.
