    Hey all,

Just looking for a bit of advice. I'm working part time in retail and also trying to make a name for myself writing.

Except nobody likes reading invisible stories which are lodged firmly in the author's head...

So every time I sit down to write I get distracted by stupid games, social networks, the usual. I really feel I'm wasting my time but can't make myself work.

Everything has been in a state of limbo in my life for almost a year. I just can't get anything to CHANGE, and I feel like I'm in a permanent rut.

Advice practical and emotional really welcome. Thanks :)

I'm not a writer, but I do song writing, because I try to do mostly originals if I'm gigging, so I know what a pain in the arse it is to get stuck in a rut!

I don't know if it'll help you, but when I get stuck with writer's block, I just put down the laptop, put my guitar away and go read some books and listen to music, as well as seeing my friends, drinking, whatever I want to do really. I find that I usually come back with some silly anecdotes from the nights out, some inspiration from what I've read/listened to, and a clear head because I've de-stressed and had some fun.

I don't know if that's gonna work for you, but it can't hurt to give it a try. :)

It seems like the main issue is you use the laptop to write, but also to do your "relaxing" (games, social networking etc.) Any college student knows how difficult this can be to separate! You could download one of those add-ons for your internet browser that allows you to block certain sites for a period of time. The one for Google Chrome is called 'Concentrate'. You could also turn off the modem, so the internet isn't so instantly accessible (obviously if it's only you using the internet!).

If you really feel like you're stuck in a complete rut, why not change your method entirely? Go traditional! Get out a pen and paper and start writing, even just plans, ideas etc. And then form them into more structured things on the paper. Don't touch the laptop until you are feeling so excited about the story that you know you'll just write and write.

    Thanks guys :)

I think I'm being a bit hard on myself trying to find space to write after doing a 12 hour day. Maybe I need to chill out a wee bit!

You do! I only write if I have a few days off in a row, because I find that I need time to relax and unwind from the stress of work before I can clear my head enough to write. You definitely need to stop being so hard on yourself! :)
