Personally I think that Krav-Maga is one of the best self-defence systems out there.
But I would recommend MMA, as it is more flexible. MMA will actually teach you how to fight. It will teach you not only how to defend yourself, but also how to attack. Also a big role in MMA takes a ground game, which in real life situation many fights will end up on the ground. Training MMA will enable you to defend yourself in these situations and control the whole fight using the grappling techniques.
Another thing is that even if you are not thinking about competitions, once you get into MMA there will be many chances to participate in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. They are not as brutal as MMA, and A LOT of female take part in them.
Try to do some research on google and watch few videos on Youtube to help you with the decision.

    Good luck :)

As the other poster mentioned, MMA is probably the way to go. AFAIK there is no MMA club in NUIG at the moment, but there are a few local clubs in Galway.

This one's the closes to the city centre, down in Creaven house.

There's a lot to choose from depending on what you think suits.
MMA, boxing, judo, taekwondo, muy thai, aikido, escrima and many more.
For self defence they're all good as long as you stick to it a couple years and get somewhat good.
Try several out, maybe 5 times each, and get a feel for what you think suits you.
I'm a guy and have done various and found that some suit my personality more than others.

From MMA clubs in Galway I would suggest to get involved with The Pointblank Gym.
Even though I don't live in Galway, I have already heard a good opinions about it from people I train with. (On the east of ireland!)

Judo is good as it has sparring with fully resisting opponents. Boxing for obvious reasons. MMA, muay thai as well. Any self defense course that says you'll be undefeatable after a few training sessions should be avoided (krav maga has bad history of this sort of marketing).

At the end of the day, try a few things and see what you like most.

Best self defense though is just to run away - more likely to be injured in training than in a random assault. And not sure how good any 'self defense training' will be against a bottle to the back of the head.

There's a few different martial arts clubs in NUIG, I recommend talking to someone from them all (it'll be easy on clubs day, they'll all be beside each other!) You'll get an idea of what each club and discipline is like, and from there you'll be in a better position to try a few out.

I've been a member of the karate club for two years, though I wasn't always in a position to attend. So I'm only in a position to really talk in depth about it as a club. On the first day you'll learn a combination of 3 useful punches, so you're already into your self defence!

As with most of the clubs (I'd imagine?) the karate club is welcoming to anyone of any skill! It's good fun and you'll learn how to defend yourself at the same time. As you progress you'll be doing some drills, but these have a benefit to your learning of self defence too! Here's the karate club Facebook page. There's a great mix of guys and girls, and it's a really cool place to just relax and learn some self defence. Also the three senseis are all called Damien!! It's like a mystic force or something!

From the karate club I went into some MMA in Strange Wolves which was great! It's not focused towards self defence (with regards to on the street) as a main goal though.

    Hi Trisha XxX,

NUIG Karate Club practice Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu, its a modern interpretation of Okinawa's historic combative-like disciplines. A completely systematized, cohesive and coherent method of learning/teaching, delivered in a traditional atmosphere.

Koryu Uchinadi is a non-competitive, totally application-based defensive practice.

The fundamental basis of Koryu Uchinadi is to provide life protection skills.

PM me if you want any other info. on the practices.

hey I've trained in a few martial arts. I currently do mma and kickboxing. If you have never trained before boxing would be best as it is easier to pick up from complete beginner then judo or mma. I train in strange wolves, there is a lot of grappling which is no good if the fight is more then one one.

Muay thai would be the way I would. In my experience fights don't always go to the ground, its normally bad drunk boxing maybe some pushing and shoving

    boxing
    muay thai
    mma
    judo
    in that order
