I'm starting BESS in September and was looking through the recommended reading list and it's quite large. Would anyone out there have any first year BESS books for sale?

You aren't expected to buy them. Some of the more popular books which would likely be checked out of the library a lot of the time might be handy to buy but other than that you'll just get most of your books from the library

Thanks Anita. If you would be able to tell me which one I should buy I would appreciate it.

I'm not in BESS so wouldn't know but I wouldn't worry about any of that now. You'll have plenty of time when you start college to think about that stuff!

Don't buy any of them. If you manage your time efficiently you will have no trouble reviewing the required material, especially as a Junior Freshman.

Not sure if you mean the course textbooks, or some other recommended books.
Whatever they are, I suggest you don't buy them.

The only one you might find handy is the Business book. To do well in Business you'll need a good understanding of most of the articles in it. Having said that, it's really just a compilation of academic articles that you can find for free anyway through TCD's JStore or similar. 'Compiled by John Quilliam' apparently warrants a €40 price tag or whatever it is.

Everything else: I wouldn't bother. Lecture slides, notes, library books, online resources etc etc are enough.

At the very least, wait a few weeks - if you're really struggling with one of the modules then buying the textbook might help you a bit.

Also just to add, that if you did decide after you arrived that you wanted to buy one or two books, BESS books seem to be among the most commonly available second-hand: it feels like every 2nd year is selling their books in Michaelmas, there are tons of posters and notices about selling first year BESS books. So you can probably pick them up relatively cheaply, compared with buying them new. Just make sure they're the correct editions, newer versions sometimes appear in time for the new academic year. Try also the SU bookshop, or keep an eye on the e-noticeboard that is emailed around every week, that often has small ads looking to sell used textbooks.
