Hi there, Im having a niggling issue with my bike the past few days. While Im cycling the pedals will randomly start clicking and locking like it's trying to change gear  Its really bugging me and any advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks

    Bike. Pedals. Etc.

    Not particularly helpful Robert.

Can you isolate where exactly the sound is coming from? Is the bike shifting gears normally? Is it an old bike, do you service it much?

If it is coming from the pedals themselves, they do have bearings inside that may need greasing or replacement. That doesn't sound like the right noise though, are you sure the sound isn't coming from near the front derailer?

Also, do the pedals turn normally on their spindles?

Sound like your cassette/chain needs cleaning, or replacing. This is common practice after x amount of Km's due to wear and tear. A trip to the bike shop is probably required.

Sorry I know Im bad at explaining, I don't know much about bikes :o Ive only had it a few months it's a ridgeback velocity if that helps and I only really use it to cycle to and from work, so not a huge amount of kms!

It's the pedals because as Im cycling the pedals click and seize up and move not in the direction Im moving them if that makes sense? And it just happens randomly as I cycle.

Sorry if you still don't get it, I don't know enough to get into real detail :(

That's ok! So it's definitely just coming from this bit?

Spin them around with your hand, see if they're moving freely or if you can feel them scraping or just generally not moving freely. Also, work out whether it's just one or both of them.

Luckily, pedals are very cheap to replace.

Ok so did a quick search on name of bike parts, so I think it's the part called the "crank" or one of the derailleurs having trouble with? Sorry that whole area I just called the pedal :( it's like it's changing gear when I haven't changed gear so my crank/pedal area shifts unexpectedly.

And again I am so sorry by my crap explanations, Im not mechanically minded at all :o

Yeah that's what I thought, didn't sound like a pedal problem, that's why I showed you the picture! Yeah chances are that one of the cables which controls which gear you're in has just stretched a bit and needs to be tightened up slightly. Completely normal.

Did you buy it new a few months ago?

Servicing your gears is something you will easily be able to do yourself, once you get a little bit more experienced with the bike and bike parts. I'd recommend for now you just drop it into wherever you bought it from for a tune up and service, you won't have to explain too much what the problem is, they'll find it out themselves.

Shouldn't be too expensive, might even be free if they remember you bought it recently.
