Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell where I can buy one of these. My bf wants one for Christmas but they are not available on the Apple site. Do I have to wait to buy the new one thats coming out later this year? If so, any idea what price it will be? Thanks.

The retail price of the new Mac Pro, scheduled for release sometime around October is very unlikely to be less than €2,500, based on the price on the old ones, and could be substantially more.
An second-hand one will cost €1600 or so.

Some suppliers have suggested that the cost of components alone described for the pre-release model as costing $2800, which would put the price of the final product at around €4,000 incl VAT and Apple's margin.

If he needs it for really heavy duty processing video paid employment, then it would be much more sensible for him / workplace to buy it himself and claim it against tax.
If he wants it because it looks cool, then he needs to jump in a lake.

Thanks for that. Wow 4000€ for a computer is out of my budget! Had an idea they would be around 2-2.5k. Any good place to look for a mac pro at the moment, new or second hand?. Have been keeping an eye on tsites like adverts etc but the mac pros for sale there are all laptops. Thanks.

You do realise they're not being released until later in the year, according to the apple website?

Yes I do. Is there not a desktop version of the mac pro available now or is this the first desktop to be released? Sorry I know nothing of Apple products.

Apple downplayed the Mac Pros over the last few years, concentrating on the better selling devices.

    There are stores like
    http://www.galmac.ie/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=7&zenid=s9cl10idg8cshbdu9e7ohe70f5

    offering refurbished Mac Pros.

You could always wait and hope that more will appear on the second-hand market once the new version is ready.

You can probably get cheaper on ebay shipped from the UK but the old buyer-beware saying applies. On Adverts there are a few of them, but some are very old 2006 models that you really wouldn't want unless building a museum. http://www.adverts.ie/for-sale/computers/apple-computers/mac-pro/520/q_mac+pro/sortby_price-desc/

The MacPro is a desktop. The MacPro is not a MacBook Pro which would be classed as a Laptop or Notebook.

    This is a MacBook Pro:

(And if you're considering buying, I'd go with one of these.)

    This is an old MacPro

And this is the new, unreleased, MacPro:

The only desktop that Apple currently do is the iMac:

You can't buy the old MacPro anymore. By today's performance standards it's not worth it anyway - a new iMac would outperform it I'd say, as would any Dell box. The new black, cylindrical MacPro will be out at the end of the year, assuming there are no delays. Also there is no indication of cost as yet, but I'd say the 4k estimates above are about right.

What would he possibly need such a high end workstation for?

    Agree with 5uspect.

Getting an i7 based MacBook Pro and connecting a thunderbolt / Usb3 disk array would be a better work tool than the old MacPro desktop.

thanks for all the input. I didn't realise the old macpro looked like that. he has one of those kicking around the place, so will hold off on a second hand unit. thanks again.

That's about 3k before VAT, beyond the OP's budget.

I do love mine tho! :D
