I have to get them for a job comming up. I heard you get one now, another in 3 months and the last one after 6 months!? Is that true?

I'm currently unemployed and have a medical card. Will a medical card cover them?

You have the schedule correct. Medical card won't cover it. Shop around for prices. The nurse at my GP did the three for €75 but I know people that paid €200 for them.

If ypu're going to work for a pharmacy there is a state scheme which coverers the vaccinations.

RobFowl, purely out of nosiness, why would a pharmacist need hep b vaccinations? Returned sharps bins?

Pretty much, also high risk clients e.g on methadone protocol

Only pharmacies who are official methadone treatment providers can get HepB injections on that free programme.

Yes that is correct, and then you have to get bloods 1 week after your final injection to confirm it worked. A tiny percentage of people need a 4th booster shot but its rare.

I got mine through my medical card. Strangely enough I didnt have to pay. I was told it was free with a medical card. I disputed this and asked them if they were sure, because as far as I was aware it wasnt. The receptionist then asked the nurse and doctor and it was confirmed for me that it was free for medical card holders.

I think they made a mistake, but whatever.

As goes medical card coverage, there's a GMS special type claim for Hep B vaccination (Code U). I have no idea what the rules around it are - the HSE handbook has the handy line "You have already been informed..." for the four vaccines which are covered in some circumstances.

This is covered on the medical card, I got mine on the medical card.

I think it's only supposed to be covered if you need it for medical reasons i.e. if you've been exposed to hepatitis b, not for occupational reasons because in an ideal world your employer would pay for it.

That would make sense for me then. I just remember them mentioning something about a "cold chain".
