Krav Maga or Israeli Martial Arts

One of the lads i've been doing boxing with took up something called krav maga a few months back. It sounded interesting after reading about it on wikipedia. I asked him to demonstrate a few moves and I was surprised as to how good but simple it was. I am interested in joining a club but there was a problem. All the websites looked like gimics with all the 'Thought to special forces' and 'learn how to defend yourself from 7 attackers'. I've heard of a guy called Patrick Cumiskey who is apparently the only real instructor in Ireland. His website had stuff about the army rangers so I was a little suspicious. Is he the only real instructor in Ireland or is the krav maga in Ireland just a way for people to get money?

James, if you use Krav Maga as a search term on this forum, you'll find plenty to form your own opinion on KM and Pat Cumisky.

    Hi James,

Regardless of whether KM as a style is just a way to get money. The instructor you've mentioned is undoubtedly (in my mind) just there to make money.

Flashy website and unrealistic promises. Steer clear.

Krav Maga in most cases is just really ow level MMA training and techniques applied badly, they show loads of BJJ techniques now but most have no clue!!

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

It says everyone should know krav maga which seems to cancel out any effects it would have

Anyone claiming to be the only person teaching real "insert martial art her" should be treated with absolute skeptacism.
krav Maga has been in Ireland a while now. If it was that good surely more guys would have learned "real" km to an extent they could teach it.
So could it be that it isn't all its made out to be. Otherwise more genuine instructors would be around.
Or the named instructor is just misleading people to make money.

You are being very, very generous Paul.

As you can appreciate I can't go into too much detail here, but I had lads (novices) train part time with me who went on to train KM full time for one month after which they came back into class and couldn't bless themselves.

My advice to anyone, based on my own experiences in work and training in both Judo and BJJ/MMA with you (RFA) and Andy's before that is if someone wants to improve their fight skills then train in a proper established martial arts club and to forget the short cuts promised by KM and other SF instructors.
