Chrome very slow to startup

Chrome's my browser of choice on my iMac (2010) but for the past year or so it has been very slow to get going on startup. Anyone have an explanation why? Once started it works great and is as quick if not quicker than Firefox and Safari but when waking from sleep or whatever, it takes at least 2 minutes of rotating…
