    Hey All.

Wife is looking at one of these and fell in love with one.
I got it checked out by a mechanic and was told the timing chain isnt good and would need to be changed soon.
I rang VW for a price and was told 900. Is this a specialised vw only job with prices to match?

Also is it a known problem with these engines? anyone any experience of them?

    Cheers

    BK

quite common for this engine to stretch chains a good independent should be able to quote you most places should have the correct tools to do them at this stage. We have done quite a few of them seems to normally happen around 100k

Are you sure? This is the turbo 1.4 not the turbo/supercharged version. If the standard 1.4 is affected by the stretchd timing chain this is the first I've heard of it.

    B6 1.4 TSI 122BHP

    if that helps?

Surprised to hear that as AFAIK it is not a known problem with these engines.

They are all affected but the twin charged versions seem to suffer more than the turbo versions.

Is it a problem to this day, just wondering of my 2011 B7 might be affected.

What is the point in using chains if they prematurely need to be replaced? Surely the point of them is to last the lifetime of the engine?

chains are used to bring down engine resistance some manufacturers are moving back towards wet belts as a quiet efficient option. Its all about making the numbers in the euro emission s cycle. The engine that the op is talking about is the turbocharged version which I have seen a lot more with stretched chains than the twin charged but I would think this is more down to the amount on the road rather than a difference in reliability
