If they weren't called electronic cigarettes, what would they be called?

    I just read this article

    Thank You For Not Vaping

In it the writer suggests that if e-cigs weren't called "cigarettes" the legislative tendency may not be so strong.
Three decades of increasingly punitive anti-smoking regulations have made American smokers a pariah class. Smoking has been thoroughly de-normalized and wholly stigmatized. Smokers are no longer viewed as doing something merely stupid or self-destructive; smoking, to many, is now morally wrong. In this sense, e-cig makers have probably erred by calling them “cigarettes,” as it’s raised the ire of those with a visceral hatred for smoking—and smokers. One also gets the sense that the banners think that sucking on an e-cigarette in a public place represents a defiant flouting of anti-smoking laws rather than what it really is: obedience to anti-smoking laws.

I don't like the term "vaping". I don't know why. But them I'm a bit of an old fart compared to most of the posters here on boards, so maybe I'm just sort of stuck in my ways and not as open to new terms as I possibly should be.

But if we didn't call them electronic cigarettes what would they be called? And if they were called something different would they have become as popular as they have? And consider my prejudice toward the term "vaping", although ironically I'm not averse to the term "vapouriser".

    Love to hear your ideas.

Maybe because 'vaping' sounds a lot like 'raping'.

Still prefer that to when people call it 'vapping' though. Because that sounds like 'fapping'.

Not sure what that says about me.

I'd stick with 'vapouriser' myself. I know that has connotations with weed and all but there are many more of our devices in the world at this stage than there are weed vapourisers surely? We should have a vape-off to see who gets to keep the term!!!

And we'll win because they'll be incapacitated waaaaaaay sooner! Hooray!

And people think the term 'electronic cigarettes' is giving vaping a bad name :-)

ENDS is the term used by the WHO and NCP by the EU, I think I'll stick with ecig, calling them anything else will need an apple to come up with the equivalent of iCig or whatever. Remember when mp3 players came out? no one had one and then apple came along, suddenly everyone knew what the thing I listened to music on was an iPod. Actually it was an iRiver mp3 player but I just gave up trying to explain the difference.
Ecigs are what people know them as or 'them things to give up smoking'.
