The best or the worst kind of ending?

Hey I'm just pondering the way some movies and tv series end.

For instance Shutter Island it has a definite ending where you know it can't come back from but it leaves a slightly ambiquis ending (It's not the worst I thought the ending was fairly straight forward but others felt the need to debate it).

But is this the best kind of ending or the worst.

On one hand it leaves you wanting more, but then you are thinking about it and in some ways needing closure on characters?

So what do you think, can you think of a better or worse ending?

Ambiguity the best or worst type of ending? 15 votes

Transformers 3 had a shockingly bad ending, it just ended as if Bay said "Fùck it, I'm done. I'm getting something to eat."

Though, it is Bay so you couldn't expect anything else.

I dont mind ambiguity. But, the amount of films who have happy endings tacked on for no apparent reason because movie execs think audiences cant handle a sad ending is pathetic.

Whatever the film was supposed to have it should have. You often get this with book rights that have been bought and directors having to change their films under pressure. If a film is good enough it will stand on its own two legs any way.

jesus you should watch the bourne legacy ends out of nowhere, the big action chase is ongoing and bang it just ends,

i like a bit of ambiguity if the story allows for it, like inception, did he or didnt he, or the sopranos, i loved both endings,

i think the more overcomplicated the plot of the story is less i like an ambiguous ending, if you wanna bring me on a chase down 10 rabbit holes i want ****ing answers, like the matrix if it ended by showing neo in the background it would have pissed me off,

There is no 'one size fits all' ending, and an ambiguous ending is by no means inherently superior to a straightforward happy one. It all boils down to the individual film - some can delightfully end on a strange, audience dividing note, while others expertly present their triumphant crowdpleasing endnote. Of course, one way or the other can also feel forced and unsatisfying. But it's not a binary 'better or worse' thing - we can only judge a film's ending within the context of the film itself.

I liked the dark knight ending it left open so my many possibilities but I didnt like the ending to the dark knight rises.

Bourne ultimatum also has a good open ended ending.

The end that isn't the end but leads to another end and then wait! - another end! Before finally the credits roll.

Also the ending which has little causal logic regarding what has gone before - that "we don't have a logical ending so have this" resolution.

Magnolia. I like that a film actually had the balls to end like that.

I love endings that leave me with something to wrestle with after the film ends. Kiarostami is the master of it for me.

Better than a film hitting you on the head with closure to the extent that you forget everything by the time you've stepped outside the cinema.

Exception: when there's Scooby Doo version.

The Devil Inside must be a contender for cheekiest ending ever, for more info go to a website? pfffff, no wonder audiences were demanding money back.

The best kind of ending is the one that makes you think about it afterwards for a while.

The Prestige is the one that most sticks out in my mind.

'The Mist' springs to mind, potential classic and great stuff the whole way through until the ending, it seemed tacked on just for the sake of a shock and completely out of character for the main hero.

I probably would have preferred something more open where I could have come to my own conclusions .......I wasn't a bit happy!
