I think we might be have some bees considering setting up shop in our small garden. There are currently about 12 of them hanging around a flowering plant which is beside the shed, they've been doing that for a week or so now.

How can I tell if there is a hive close by, would I be seeing more than a dozen bees?

Is it safe to fence off the area from our dogs and leave the bees to it? Is there any time of the year they get aggressive or would pose a danger to the dogs or us?

If they are setting up a hive, is there anything we can do to help them along?

There might not even be a hive in the garden, but would like to know what to do if they are hanging around for a reason.

maybe its just a plant thats attracting them. bees would sell their grannies for a buddleia in flower. thats like crack cocaine to them.

also they go mad for sedum spectabile in autumn. often walked into the garden on a hot autumn day and there would be a low level hum from the noise of the bees.

basically, if you grow it, they will come.

    they leave other animals alone.

Hi, I just found a beehive in my garden. I was clearing an area under a tree with a spade and didn't know it was there until I stuck the spade in. Thankfully I don't think I did much damage... I only spotted a dozen or so and left them in peace. I checked them A few times over an hour or more and they had repaired my damage and while they did so, I carried on working in garden.
I felt awful for disturbing them as I would never intentionally harm a bee. I was afraid they might attack me but they were only interested in repairing their nest. I have a small number of flowers and shrubs planted and they are welcome to stay as long as they like!
