On espn at 1.0am here (3hrs)
    Broadcast: FOX, FX, Facebook
MAIN CARD (FOX, 8 p.m. ET)
Demetrious Johnson vs. John Moraga - for UFC flyweight title
    Jake Ellenberger vs. Rory MacDonald
    Robbie Lawler vs. Bobby Voelker
    Jessica Andrade vs. Liz Carmouche

    PRELIMINARY CARD
    Michael Chiesa vs. Jorge Masvidal
    Danny Castillo vs. Tim Means
    Mac Danzig vs. Melvin Guillard
    Daron Cruickshank vs. Yves Edwards
    Ed Herman vs. Trevor Smith
Germaine de Randamie vs. Julie Kedzie
PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook, 4 p.m. ET)
    Aaron Riley vs. Justin Salas
    John Albert vs. Yaotzin Meza

Not the most star studded card but It might surprise a few
I'd imagine the vast majority of mma fans are most looking forward
to the rory jake match up and it's easy to see why

I fancy rory to take this on points myself but jakes price (2/1) is
not to be sniffed at and 18 of the 27 pros went for jake to win (mostly by ko)

Going for mighty mouse to win on points like most of the time

    Guillard danzig...toss a coin
I would have thought when guillard was on a winning streak that
he'd be too hot for danzig but not so sure now
We'll know if chiesa is ready for a step up also when he takes
    on masvidal
No doubt in my mind what chiesas tactics will be and if he gets it
to the mat it could be a long night for jorge
Otherwise it's masvidal all the way for me

fancy lawler to ko voelker also

so much to look forward to with three events coming in four weeks

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the Ellenberger fight. That should be a decent scrap.

Cards like this can often turn out some of the best fights, so I wouldn't go skipping this card if anyone's not too interested.

An extra bonus for me is I'm away on honeymoon at the minute and the time difference means I actually get to watch the card in a pub for once!

Mac Danzig is usually entertaining enough.

Check out Mac Danzig vs Matt wiman to see what I mean.

Feelin positive about Ellenberger tonight. He just needs to land one clean hook in an exchange and it's night night for pretty boy !

Looking forward to seeing Mike Chiesa again tonight too, always enjoy his fights

My mma eye is not very well trained but this is an enjoyable enough card so far. Smith Herman was excellent. Hoping Ellenberger MCDonald will be the war that is expected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

well I kinda hope it isn't a war coz on paper Rory has a better tank and a larger arsenal but in the bubble when digs start flying - Jake lays people out !

Interesting fight, Carmouche was dominant but badly lacking in finishing ability. She was winging shots too much instead of picking them. I'm sure she's not too far away from the title picture but I can't ever see Rousey being controlled on the ground like that so Liz would need to be better at finishing quickly.

I'm sure the wife is pleased!

I talked my missus into going to a bar in New York to watch the Bones-Machida card. In Hooters no less!

She was bored silly after 1 fight though so it didn't last.

I'm on night shift tonight so live all the way.

    Holy crap...

The rebirth of Robbie Lawlor continues!

    Nobody else watching this live?

Sums it up. As if there weren't enough reasons to hate McDonald already.

Work got in the way, missed the decision. I presume it went to McDonald? Anything interesting from the interview with regards to him fighting GSP?

Yeah Rory got the decision, I am not sure whether there was an interview. If there was I missed it.

30-27, 28-27 and 30-27 for McDonald. No interview.

Strange that there wasn't an interview, not like they're short on time.

    Maybe they couldn't wake Rogan.

No interviews at all tonight, I think it's because it's on FOX and they want to show as many adverts as possible.

I think it's because it's on FOX and they want to show as many adverts as possible.

    Good point.

Bit daft though, fair enough for the other undercard fights but when it's a number one contender fight and the result presents a teammate vs teammate for the title situation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

Rory uses his fancy speed and angles not to fight... but to literally run away as efficiently as possible.

What a pile of complete bollox.

It was Rorys fault it wasn't a fight but Jake should've hunted him down more and launched in there and gave him less respect... McDonald can't throw a KO punch to save his fukin life so Jake should have just gone feckin straight ahead right into him past that stupid open hand jab and hit him, especially after the first round and a half. ahhhhhhh bollox I hate fights like that! they don't prove a damn thing. I wouldn't reward Rory much from that performance if I was Dana. I'm sure we're gona get the usual GSP haters comin out with 'well thats what ya get with a tristar gym guy etc' but there's nothing similar about GSP and Rory. GSP damages with his jab and uses it to take people down and smashem up and he's got strong kicks etc.. This pretty boy ain't as dangerous as people are saying - he's gona get munched by the first guy to run straight into him and hit him a couple proper digs in the face! Big Rig would massacre him if he could stop running away for just second, sap.

Exactly. Compare Ellenberger's face after that fight with Koscheck's face after the GSP fight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

to be fair Jake didn't show up... didn't know what to do, was too tight and his range and footwork was just wrong for this fight. He's too short, too MT in his stance and he bunches up too much in his guard which means when he loads his punches and then unravels his guard to swing he sends you a telegram first to let you know it's coming in about a weeks time. Once he's in there inside you he can swing short sharp hooks but jesus was he useless getting in on Rory who should try out for the Canadian Olympic fencing team and earn some money modeling cravats for Hugo Boss on the side coz he is not fit for a fukin cage after that pissy sh1te !

Yep, we went to Hooters to watch it tonight too! :D
Got chatting to another big UFC fan at the bar and herself was happy enough drinking away beside us so it was all good!

Ellenberger v McDonald was a poor fight. Neither guy got into a really good rhythm and it was a bit of a snooze-fest. I have to say I was disappointed by Ellenbergers performance. I expected more from him.

Mighty Mouse is a class act. His speed is unreal, and that transition to the armbar was pure brilliance. Really enjoyed that fight.

    Great ko by Lawlor too.

Overall it was a decent enough night of fights. The thing I took away from it though was that neither Ellenberger or McDonald would cause a minutes trouble for GSP. He'd steamroll both of them based on tonight's performances.

Rory does just enough to win!! Ellenbeeg was ****ing **** wouldn't go for it at all ... Another big hyped bad fight. I hope condit smashes Rory's face in again.

Must say I find Mighty Mouse frightfully boring.

It's also annoying listening to Rogan lick the whole off him about being the most skilful technical fighter in the whole of MMA - yawn.

How many times is he gonna say that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,450 ✭✭✭califano

Mighty Mouse very good again. Moraga will come on for the run at that age, he has a lot of game and was still fresh deep in the fight, just out crafted.
Rory has loads more in the tank but he will only show it when someone drags him out to deep waters.
Robbie Lawlor very impressive. Hes Irish, traced to Galway dont you know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

Lawlor looked so sharp and his head kicks are damn good but he needs to keep his overhand in the back pocket for the right time and not keep lashing it out there. He could finish anyone when in the right mood like last night. He was a class above Voelker but he's still a full class below GSP.
Wonder how he'd fare against Condit? He's got more power and KO ability obviously but Carlos runs such a fast jittery pace I'm not sure he could stay with him even over 3 rounds. Dying for Lawlors next fight though. I'd say most are. Love his attitude in the cage. His footwork looked really good too at times, cutting angles, resetting and feinting.

Melvin Guillard was very impressive in his win against Mac Danzig. Some lovely jabs, slips and counters. Good to see him get back on the win column. Apparently with this KO win he beat BJ Penn for the most knock outs in LW UFC history and beat Jim Miller for the most wins in LW UFC history.

Jorge Masvidal is a potential top ten LW in my opinion. I think a potential match up with fellow former Strikeforcer could be very entertaining.

Its' crazy to think how Robbie Lawler is a veteran of the UFC and he's only 31. Returning to WW was a great decision. If Nick Diaz gets his thumb out a bout against Lawler could really send sparks flying.

It's difficult to say who was to blame for the MacDonald vs. Ellenberger snoozefest. Ares (what an awful nickname) was happy to jab away and not engage and Ellenberger wasn't keen on takedown attempts which was realistically his best chance given the reach disadvantage. I predict MacDonald gets the winner of Condit - Kampmann.

Never seen someone as distressed after a knockout as Mac Danzig, seemed like he was crying but im sure he had little cognizance of what was going on. He took 2 free fully fledged punches to the face when he was out. Tough game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,003 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

fox have made a flute of this

4 fights in a 3hr programme which would have had at least two
more fights if fox werent in it
can't find the guillard or masvidal fights from the usual sources

I'm having a harder time these days watching undefended punches or hammerfists to starched fighters before the ref dives in. Dan Miragliotta did a great job clearing Lawlor out of it last night when he jumped on Voelker though must be said - he tackled Robbie out of it like all refs should be doing, at least as quick as that - it's their paramount function in all fights I reckon... to prevent further damage than necessary and it's more and more important as the sport reaches higher and higher levels. The most risky strikes are the ones to starched guys with their heads on the mat. Maybe its age making me soft.

He tweeted that 2 guys while trying to assist him were actually leaning on his chest preventing him from breathing. He tried to tell them to get off but his motor skills were a little worse for wear, hence the grunting noise.

It's an elaborate cover up cause he cried :D

For me, that was the most entertaining title fight I've seen since Sonnen Vs Silva 1.
